JCM800 FX loop issue - Dumbleator?

Pulled out the old JCM800 2205 tonight and I popped a delay (dd-3) into the effects loop and it killed the tone of the amp. This amp does have a serial fx loop and I was curious to know if one could use a dumbleator or a kleinuator in the loop to manage the send/return levels to bring back the tone.
