Current sources for Piher resistors?
Are there any current sources for the Piher resistors that talbany mentioned in his 102 build? Are these things available to mere mortals?

Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

I got lucky on the metro forum and scored a full set for a JTM45 build i was about to start. Then i got even luckier on the same forum when some one else put a JTM45/100 Black Flag "Kit" up for sale, so i nabbed that bad boy. Then i got even luckier again when some one else put up more piher's and i was able to score the two that i needed to make the swap from one value difference at the bias diode between the JTM45 and the JTM45/100 Black Flag, and also to be able to replace the 10K 1 watt that i was going to use a ABCC for..
Moral of the story..
I got lucky..
The bay often has individual pihers, but they don't seem to be in values that lend them self to amp building, even though the adds say stuff like Marshall/Vox/Hiwat..
On the other hand..
There do still seem to be useful batches of Ikras that pop up more frequently.
Having said all of this, the only reason I am interested in this is that i am currently enjoying the thrill of the hunt looking for NOS parts for my JTM100 build. Ordinarily i wouldn't worry about it to much. I've spent time with a JTM45 made using new parts and one using NOS parts and the tones where different, but no more different than you would expect two different amps to sound, and at the end of the day they both sounded great. My plan is to probably sell my JTM100 when its made and then use those funds for my next dumble build.
Ironically its working out cheaper to do this that to buy new parts and go straight into a dumble build because there are people that fall for the idea that NOS is better, not just different, and they are prepared to pay a premium.

I think you're right. Max said it best in a post of his about the subject...Ironically its working out cheaper to do this that to buy new parts and go straight into a dumble build because there are people that fall for the idea that NOS is better, not just different, and they are prepared to pay a premium.
But, just like in dating... the fun is in the hunt... and we don't have to marry an amplifier, so we can just keep hunting and let the stockyard grow.BTW: Any hobbybuilder should perhaps be aware that the moment of the completion of his personal grail amp with the long hunted grail parts may perhaps turn out to be a nightmare made true: A hobbybuilder with the holy grail in his hands is a knight without a quest!
I bought a couple of these.. Seems useful in a D-Style amp in a couple of spots. I have yet to receive them, probably takes a couple weeks from .nl.
