Building a Liverpool
Hi guys, I'm a newbie to this forum and quite a good one I might add! Before I ask any questions let me give you some background on myself. I started playing music in 1965 (string bass) and then in '66 my folks bought me a Coral electric guitar (Japanese). I was flabbergasted! While still playing the string bass I practiced the guitar and auditioned for my high school jazz band (21 pieces) and was accepted. I guess my folks realized I had some talent and purchased for me a Gibson Byrdland-1959-and a 1963 Vox AC100. (After these expenditures I was on my own). The Vox promptly blew up and it took 10 months to get the Radiospares transformer(s) from England. So subsequently I bought a Blond piggyback Bassman (one of several). I played a 1954 Stratocaster which was given to me by my guitar teacher and the Byrdland through the Bassman and that launched me on my career playing music. During those years I owned many Fender amps including 3 Tweed Bassman's, a Hiwatt 100 stack, Ampeg V-4 etc. I made my living playing music from 1973 to 1985 when I quit to pursue other endeavours. My last instruments were a 1962 candy apple Strat, a 2-tone '59 rosewood Strat and a 1959 (real one) sunburst Les Paul. I played through the Vox AC 100 which had a PPIMV installed and a Hiwatt 100 for the clean sound. Having grown up when a lot of these amps and guitars were just "used" instruments I think I still do know what good tone is...hopefully! Now in the last few years I have gotten back into playing the guitar and although I could never afford the instruments I used to have I am beginning to believe that the amplifier is even more important than a lot of musicians give it credit for. Right now I'm just doing some home recording with me, myself and I and to facilitate this I have built 3 amplifiers. One is a 50 watt Plexi, a low power tweed twin and a 5e3 tweed deluxe. The first two are Ceriatone's and the deluxe is my own build. I jazzed the two Ceriatone's up with NOS tubes Sozo vintage caps (Plexi) and paper and wax/oil capacitors in the twin. I just powered up the deluxe yesterday and it sounds awesome! A matter of fact all of them sound AWESOME! ( I must be forgetting how loud I played with a band because these amps get friggin' loud!). Now for the next build-a Liverpool. I've always liked the sound of EL84's although this was not a tube that was used in American amplifiers and even when I first began playing I never remember any one of my fellow musicians playing an AC30. My question is this: was there any particular type of capacitor that Ken liked to use in his designs? Such as, polyester/foil, paper in oil etc... And, were there any 1 watt resistors used in the preamp section? Most of the (scant) drawings of Ken's designs do not indicate one way or the other. I admire Ken and his design philosophy and the soundclips I have heard of original Trainwrecks and the Komet amps (Jack Devine) sound great. And most of all, if you guys could lend your build advice with possible links it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
