Richter Supra-Luxe 5E3 with VVR (Clips Included)

Post by doveman »

This is some doodling around to show my Richter Supra-Luxe ...
  • Adjusted the V1 to a 5751
  • Added the VVR from Dana at Hall Amplification ... Sara Richter helped a ton (see other posts)
  • Bruce at Memphis Amps made the 2x10 open back cab finishing both the head and cab to match ... I added two Eminence 10516 speakers (I said EVM in the first video which is a mistake).
  • Changed the coupling caps on V1 to .022uf and V2 to .047uf to take a bit of the bass off (see other posts)
Here it is with the Tele, Strat, LP, P90 and 335 type guitars in five clips. EDIT NOTE: replaced the original 5 longer clips with this shorter improved clip Phil_S suggests ... save you some time if you are late to this thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-2gNkXuTgk

What do you think? I think between Sara @ Richter, Dana's VVR, Bruce's cab from Memphis Amps, and some personal tweaking with the soldering iron ... we did good. 8)

Hey Doveman, I only mean what I'm about to say in the kindest way, but I fear it will come across mean spirited. I want to assure you it is not meant that way. Less talk and more guitar. Typically, when the person doing the demo talks for more than 10 seconds, I cut it off. I suspect others have similar sentiments. I managed to push the recording ahead to where the real demo was done and the parts I heard were very good. You can probably edit those down to less than 2 minutes each and they'd be just right. For example, I don't think you need to explain what pickup or how you roll controls up or down. We can see all that when you roll the knob or flick the switch, or we can just get it from the audio.

I takes real guts to put yourself out there. Congratulations on doing that and for some decent tone, too.

No harm ... I did want to talk about the amp ... the VVR ... what speakers in the first one with the Tele. The rest were meant to be a bit of licks on different guitars. This forum is way more educated that most ... my apologies. Not posting a huge amount anymore on any forums ... but I wanted to get some clips up from this latest and think last project. I learned about the VVR here.

But I'm going to leave it the way it is ... I'm OK with it. The youtube thing takes some time and I don't want to redo it. If members turn it off early I'm OK with that too.

Again ... not taken as mean spirited ... your probably right.

I was really digging the Slide clips in video 4 with the P90's, very cool.

Very nice playing and a great sounding amp. Thanks for sharing it.

Is the entire amp under the VVR or just the phase invertor and power amp?

The entire amp ... Dana has a VVR unit that controls the whole rig if it's cathode biased up to 50w. Since this is a 30w 5E3, it's a perfect amp for that sort of VVR unit. I can't see not adding it to these tweeds.

I've got a post on the richter forum that details the entire VVR installation if you are interested. Of course, Dana is right here on this forum ... he helped a lot along with Sara Richter as I was learning.

I have used Dana Hall's VVR on 3 different amps and installed two of them in Sept '09. The amps have had alot of use and I've had NO issues or problems with the VVR's. I am very happy with how well they work especially for trying to record something.

However, I have only used the VVR on the phase invertors and power amp & left the preamps alone.

So I was curious what approach you were taking?

There is quite a bit of information about the VVR's along with comments and photos on the Hoffman forum:

I like the sound, always been a fan of the tweed tone. Cool beast with the bigger tubes/output section.

Since this is my first and only youtube demo to date, I stumbled on how to edit and annotate videos fairly easily. So here is a 10 minute video that compresses all the above videos and is maybe a bit easier to listen to for everyone. I did leave the part in where I talk about the VVR change ... a major reason for this demo. But give this a view if you like:

Thanks for the input Phil_S ... it was easier than I thought.

thanks a lot for that ...

Interesting that I had one amp '78 Boogie Mk1 with an EVM12L and one guitar '80 Yamaha SA2000 for 25 years. No pedals. About 5 years ago I joined a forum and a bazillion dollars later. I've got two amps ... 5 speaker cabs ... 5 electric guitars ... no pedals to pedalboard and back again to nothing ... etc. etc. I will say that I'm glad I made the trip ... I've leaned a ton. Built and modded amps and guitars. Both my amps are killer ... all the guitars are about perfect in their own way. Everything has been modded in some way shape or form. Except the Yamaha SA2000 ... maybe it's because it wasn't easy to get inside ... it's bone stock.

But I'm about out of ideas for amps, speakers, loops, relays, pickups, pots, caps, cabs, shielding, pedals ... you name it. I'm not on many of the boards now. Sticking on a couple while I finish this Richter project. The dog-bone handle for the new speaker cab should arrive early next week then it will be complete.

But I'm spent ... in more ways than one. It's hard to stop ... it's my only vice. I'd like to try to just concentrate on improving my playing and playing more ... got a couple of things in the works though. 8)

Yay Doveman! Two thumbs up! The new one is much better for guys like me who have short attention spans :D and you did a great job of editing it. IMO, Sara and Dana should hire you.

thanks ... constructive criticism is a wonderful thing. I'd love to see Sara, Bruce and Dana get a few more of these out but I'm happy being the only one on the planet with this particular amp configuration. Plus ... the dark brown "dog bone" handle for the speaker cabinet just showed up ... so what I think is my last serious gear project is complete. hallelujah!

Maybe ... but what do I know?

Nice demo!

What kind of camera did you use? I see you have the amp mic'd. Did you record the audio into a separate audio track and then sync it with the video? Been thinking of doing youtube video. Trying to learn about the what gear to use.

Thanks!

Actually, the mic on the amp is not used in the recording. It's a two year old Sony Handy-Cam using the on-board mic. Does a pretty good job but it compresses the volume. So when I cranked it up, it still doesn't sound real loud in the room but it is. Tones are pretty accurate though.
