Tube comparison chart

Post by Chazz »

Where do I get a chart to compare, for example, KT-66's with EL-34's, or KT-88's with 6L6's, etc? You know, differences in tone, voltage, etc, what amps can be rebiased for which tubes (ex. can a Deluxe BF be rebiased for KT-66's, how would that sound, etc).
Thanks!

the tube substition hand book is a nice reference for which tubes cross and substitute. Google data sheet for the tubes you are interested in and compare the data.

KT66 - 6L6GC - 5881 - 7027 (with mod) - 7581A/KT66

KT77 - 6CA7 - EL34

KT88 - 6550A

EL34 - 6CA7 - 7D11 - 12E13 - KT77 - KT88

6L6 - 5881

I think you will have to do some Googling. Some of the tube vendors have detailed desriptions of power and preamp tubes' tone, usually though for audio rather than guitar.
Check www.audiotubes.com, www.vacuumtubevalley.com.

As far as biasing KT66s in a Deluxe etc. Google should get you that, but don't forget extra heater current draw 1.6A vs 6V6 0.45A each, not a good idea you would kill the PT heater winding and possibly the HT winding too. KT66s in a 6L6 amp probably OK in a BF Fender but not in a modern one (they don't buy the quality of iron like they used to).
