I got lots of help from the good folks on here, especially Guitarman 18, who donated an RN65. Top man, Paul, thanks. Not forgetting Structo, who even answered my PMs from his sick bed, now that's dedication!
It is all finished now, seems to be running at 230v, so that is good.
As for a tube, I stuck a Marshall ECC83 in there, seems to be fine. Bloom and harmonics are sounding good too. I am waiting to get a delay, probaly a G Sharp, at the moment, I am just running my RV7 Hardwire reverb, which sounds fine.
Sound is great, I have been tweaking the knobs today and I really like the tone I am getting with my HB Strat, the SC Strat is not so good, probably because it needs a better set up, which I will do when I get a chance.
Without TAG, this project would have been impossible, all the info, pics and layouts etc are here, together with some helpful people, thanks again.

Yes, I find my non HRM 50 prefers humbucker guitars but you can mod it with a couple things to make it more friendly to single coils.
You can add a cap on a switch to parallel into the mid cap.
I have a .01uF mid cap on the board and a .05uF on the switch.
I have the switch labeled Fat and Thin.
I also put a switch on the local feedback loop on V1.
I labeled that, Smooth and Raw.
Both are sort of subtle changes when switched but are more obvious when the amp is turned up loud.
The mid cap mod makes it a bit fatter for single coils.
The LFB switch just opens it up a bit more when the amp is up.
Hard to describe, a little looser or not as tight sounding with the loop off.
You can experiment with the value of the added mid cap.
You can also experiment with the value of the treble cap setup to fatten the upper mids.

I'm going to end up with more switches than a 747 
Yeah the HB Strat has a very ordinary Jap neck pu, but sounds fine for clean jazz, while the bridge pu is an old DiMarzio Super Distortion that I bust had rewound by Kent Armstrong himself back in the day, it must be 25 years old now!
The SC Strat has a nice old DiMarzio Blue Velvet in the bridge that I bought in SF somewhere, Haight Ashbury I think
. Middle and neck has a couple of Texas Specials. Dunno if they like the D-style too much. The action is quite high, I guess, and needs some fret levelling to get it just right. Like HRM, it's just harder to play.
With the HRM lift, the 50w definitely has 2 characters, much more Marshally in HRM mode, more rocky, more blues-rocky, in fact.
With the HRM lifted, it is much smoother, less edgy, and volume swells are a joy, it really does sound like a violin LOL.
