Circuit recommendations??
I sold a a little 6V6 Express to a fella some time ago. He liked the feel of it but needed way more headroom. He cited the normal channel of a Fender Super Reverb as one of his faves. Wants 6L6s and TMB arrangement. I'm tempted to just make another Express with 6L6s and maybe eliminate the third gain stage. Make the bypass caps switchable.
Any suggestion?

Re: Circuit recommendations??
Sounds like a plan, however you may want to use the 3rd stage as a mixer like in the Super.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: Circuit recommendations??
Or use the unused triode as a cathode follower which warms up the tone and drops the gain a bit and works nicely with TMBs. Use the first triode pair for 2 channels and the extra triode makes a cathode follower. Using the first two triodes in parallel matchless style also lowers it's output impedance to feed the TMB and should work well too. I have used all these methods and they do work. The cathode follower may be under appreciated in its contribution to tone. Merlin Blencowe seems to think that the CF is a big part of early Fender and Marshall tone.
Re: Circuit recommendations??
They add some really nice compression and you can adjust the cathode resistor to taste with lower values giving more warmth. I use 47k fixed and a 50kB trimmer in series to ground to dial it in.Rick wrote:Or use the unused triode as a cathode follower which warms up the tone and drops the gain a bit and works nicely with TMBs. Re: Circuit recommendations??
I like the idea... it is starting to get close the same circuit as the amp I call the "Rockster". It was basically the Rocket schematic with a pair of Octals in the output section. I built it using an Express chassis and eventually put KT-66 tubes in it. When it was all said and done it was basically a reinvention of the 59' Bassman.Rick wrote:Or use the unused triode as a cathode follower which warms up the tone and drops the gain a bit... I'll be interested to follow your progress.

Re: Circuit recommendations??
Sounds like he would really like a risson LTA 120 though most are a pair RCA 6550.

Re: Circuit recommendations??
Thanks for the help and suggestions! Wound up just doing the Super Reverb normal channel.
Re: Circuit recommendations??
You can't get much more fendery than the Rocket with Normster's reverb using 6L6 output section. I love that amp and it gigs very well.
Rawnster did a version of this amps as well as others.

Hmm, just picked up some trannies that would suit the Rocket well. I think that will be next on my list.
Re: Circuit recommendations??
I was going to say it sounded like he was describing a big bottle Rocket.
I've got one in the works, 6V6.

Yeah, I hear ya, but the more I thought about it, the more I figured I should just make what he cited as great tone. I love it when I hear "make me something really unique and make it sound just like this amp..."
gut shots or layout
any chance you would post gut shots or a layout as I am trying to do a super normal chanel w/ cathode bias? thanxx any help much appriciated

Re: Circuit recommendations??
Don't have a layout. I just made the board up and started wiring. Obviously, it's a bit different than the usual Fendery/Marshally layout. It's just the normal channel with a couple of extra parts from effects channel that are in original signal path. I have a schem of the preamp if you want. A fellow at Hoffman's was kind enough to provide a nice computer generated one. Made some changes to power supply like eliminated the choke, bigger screen resistors, etc. The switches pull bypass caps/resistors in or out of circuit. This thing was DEAD quiet.
