6W6's

Post by Cliff Schecht »

I'd like to know what others experiences are with 6W6's. I've had a bunch sitting in the stockpile for a while and recently compared the datasheet to a 6V6 and 6L6. The filament current draw is more like a 6L6 while the plate dissipation is closer to a 6V6 (albeit slightly lower plate/screen ratings). I know of people shoving these in their Champs and similar with good results. I'm definitely going to try these in some of my single-ended designs but I'm a bit weary about how these would perform/hold up in an Express build. Has anybody tried these in an Express build? I'm quite happy with the EL34 sound but I'm just as susceptible to BUMS (blind urge to mod syndrome) as any other builder :). I guess the goal with doing this would be to achieve a slightly quieter (volume-wise) Express without sacrificing the characteristic sound of the amp.

Reference datasheets:
6W6: http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/fran ... /6W6GT.pdf
6V6: http://www.pmillett.com/tubedata/HB-3/R ... V6-GTA.PDF
6L6: http://www.retrovox.com.au/STC6L6G.pdf

Also, something that I haven't been able to find is the typical bias voltage of an Express with 6V6's. What grid voltage (and plate current) do people typically run their 6V6 Express builds at?

When I switch between 6V6 and EL34 in my Express-ish build, the volume difference is all but non-detectable. Both are deafening! :D
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...
