Re: Kimock's #86????
O.k so I did some reading and found this:
"Transition blackface amps" (starting around '81/'82) already very similar to 4. generation amps but some still with an "Accent" switch, some already with a small "Presence" pot, like "Dumble #0084", "Dumble #0094"
Thanks Max!!!
So lets change the question, anybody have any idea what the 4th generation
ODS is all about???? layout??? schem???
Or how different is it from say#124.
Thanks
Chris

Re: Kimock's #86????
Chris, IM just starting with the dumble amps. IM working on a # 40,
and a #124 after that a HRM. one thing I can say after all the bugs are fixed
voltages are stable then the fun starts I have never used a tube made after
1980, I get out my tube tester and match all the tubes for starters.
Then try it out most of the time I will change V-1 over 100 times to get the sound in my head. I have found the telefunken ecc803s to be the best V-1
pre amp tube ever a friend gave me a box of them in trade I will never spend $650.00 for a pre amp tube, The RFT are fine pre amp tubes in the ecc803s and ecc803. MY last build V-1 telefunken ecc803s V-2 brimar ecc83 v-3 bimar
ecc803, cleans to die for with clean gain.
I know this is off topic but after the build this it the next step.

Hi Plexi,
I have a few dumble builds under my belt. The problem is they were done when this forum was just getting started. Dog ears was a huge help in getting those amps to sound better.
You are right about the voltages, 200-210 in v-1 and v-2 are just right....
NOS glass is nice but who the hell can afford it!!!
I remember Kimock telling me he realy liked the tele long plates in #86, wish we had time for the lead channel!!!!
Steve is a great guy!!!
Thanks
Chris
Re: Kimock's #86????
Larry N who posts here every once in a while has done a lot of tech work for Steve on his guitars in the past and may know a thing or two about his amps. I would imagine K&M have been inside this one, not that that helps us any...

Re: Kimock's #86????
The amp amp that got me hooked on the Dumble Quest is a K & M modified Bassman. I got it about the same time as the Opal came out. The dealer who I bought it from put me in contact with Joe who told me that the Bassman was a exact copy of Kimock's #86 built as Steve's lay there divulging it's secrets. Bill also said that it's the first prototype for what became the custom. How much is hype, one never knows.............. perhaps we should take some pictures?

Re: Kimock's #86????
Well,
Short of pictures, how close is it to #124 is what I would like to know....I mean....it's probably different from say #40...........I got a better look at the later amp he had....(#144???)....
Thanks
Chris

Re: Kimock's #86????
I have a gig on Saturday, then I can open it up on Sunday for some picture time. I love the amp and that's what's always what mattered to me. As to it being a "exact" of Kimocks, that's what I was told however, I never really put too much into it as it's a modified fender whereas Kimocks is a AL chassis full Dumble. We'll see on Sunday.

Not to stray off topic but the one tube I've always wanted to try is the Telefunkin Ecc 803.. I'll bet they are wonderful.. Take Care!!

Re: Kimock's #86????
Are the two new ECC803S, Tungsol Reissue and JJ, worth considering?
