Wow what a great amp! Top playing and tones too. Love the 339. I'm just starting a new 22w 6V6 build and now the miniHRM is definitely going to be built too. I think your development will be very popular with folks on here.
What a fantastic job you have done here, together with online collaboration from the TAG.
I saw the pics of your combo. What size chassis and speaker did you use please? I am building my 22w on a Dlite size chassis but this could go a little smaller, I guess.
I will certainly build a lightweight pine combo cab for the miniHRM (or Mat-amp HRM)
Voi hyvin
Roger
Thanks for Your kind words !
Don't remember the exact size of the chassis (am at work), about 30cm wide so about 12 inches. The speaker on my combo is Weber 1265 ceramic that I don't like at all. The clips are recorded with 2x12'' Delta Pro cabinet that in my opinion is great match with this little amp. I would try to find a speaker that colors as little as possible the sound of the amp.
The EF86 seems to be a quite sensitive tube so I would not recommend to build a combo around it. I've installed rubber grommets to the tube socket and am planning to put extra weight to the tube shield of the EF86.
Good luck for Your 6V6 build
regards
Roger

Barry Ampmaker also does an equivalent

It is half the cost of the Hammond £23 vs. £41 - think it will be OK?
Re: miniHRM evolution
hello mat! fantastic tone! please, i'm very curious about this distortion, where you have volume pot/gain pots? does this distortion coming from preamp ECC83+EF86 or EL84 tube is "over the edge" also?mat wrote:I changed my miniHRM build (HRM pre with single EL84 as a power tube) into EF86 od section. I like the results very much. The amp is a joy to play. Not exactly a dumble sound but more squishy string attack which I seem to like. Quite loud when the PAB and od on. Short blues clip:

Re: miniHRM evolution
Thanks bepone, IIRR the OD volume was about 1 o'clock and the drive was at full. The distortion comes definitely from both the pre and from the power amp.bepone wrote:hello mat! fantastic tone! please, i'm very curious about this distortion, where you have volume pot/gain pots? does this distortion coming from preamp ECC83+EF86 or EL84 tube is "over the edge" also?mat wrote:I changed my miniHRM build (HRM pre with single EL84 as a power tube) into EF86 od section. Re: miniHRM evolution
hello mat, thanks for clarification. why is this important to me, i'm asking because i'm building amp which is like yours, but with KT88 in output!mat wrote: Thanks bepone, IIRR the OD volume was about 1 o'clock and the drive was at full. paralell single ended 30W, Ultra linear transformer. dumble preamp.
and now, my target is smooth and nice distortion--> not easy task if we know that single ended amps have "poor crunch sound". you have great OD sound, very fluid, fantastic! for sure that EL84 tube have great impact on your sound. how will KT88 tubes react in my case?? hm hm hm.. they have a lot of clean headroom for sure!
if i would go with EF86 on OD channel to drive KT88, two of them.. i think that sound will suffer a lot because EF86 can not drive KT88'-s (poor current possibilites of EF86)
maybe i will put some buffer after EF86 tube to KT88 (more tubes, yeah!)
Re: miniHRM evolution
i have build two years ago one prototype single ended,
KT88 paralell single ended 30W, with trainwreck preamp, just to see how it works, ultralinear transformer to put KTT88 in linear region
here is what i've got:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qqA4Gzn1yY
sorry for bad rec - it is from cell phone, it was shooted just "for the record"
i've got very agressive overdrive, some kind of tough and nervous sound(because of use of the russian 6N1P, 6N2P tubes..)
i want to rebuild this amp again, it was extremely dynamic and touch response, but with better, and softer overdrive
this thread "hit me in my ribs" to do so :

Re: miniHRM evolution
I've noticed that speaker plays a big part on how this amp sounds! Weber ceramic 1265 or eaven emiRWB did not do it for me. Delta pro 12A sounded really good.

Re: miniHRM evolution
hello mat, thanks for this info! very interesting, delta is PA speaker with "more linear" response then usual, guitar speaker! my friend plays blues and, also, he prefer eminence PA speakers in front of the "guitar" speakers i will try it def.mat wrote:I've noticed that speaker plays a big part on how this amp sounds! Re: miniHRM evolution
I recorded very sketchy strat clip today. Did not adjusted or noticed the amp settings at all, just played my (out of tune) strat with Kinman pu's.
The clips is first clean channel and then od channel with varying volumes and pu positions. Long mindless noodling warning
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10324671
Here is also a very raw clip with my 15 year old son on the drums: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10324668
This amp does the raw blues/rock quite nicely I think.
No processing, just the Boss delay on the passive loop..
Cheers,

Re: miniHRM evolution
Mat, you always play such great guitar riffs and tone! Really enjoyed that alot. Especially the "noodling" which seemed very focused to my ears. I'd say your 15yr old son has some real talent.
I sure appreciate your sharing what you've done. You ought to be very proud of that amp design and your playing also. Impressive tone.
With respect, 10thtx.

My son tried our bands drummers set/sticks for the first time, was not very comfortable with it he said. Complitely different from His own set.
I'm slowly gathering parts for my next build. It will be as the 86-Special but with 2xEL84 push/pull. I've never earlier built a 2xEL84 power amp. I would be appreciated if someone could suggest a power transformer or/and output transformer for the project. Hammonds are quite reachable in here.
I might try the AC15 power section for starters.

I hope we can meet up when I next get to Helsinki. It will likely be in the summer, when I take my vacation
PS I now have my 2x6V6 chassis 17x8x2.5", so next I will get the miniHRM 12x8x2" chassis, and then order parts for both
Re: miniHRM evolution
How about one of these, with switchable B+, quite cheap too.mat wrote:Jeff, thanks again for Your kind words10thTx wrote:Mat, you always play such great guitar riffs and tone!
