My Church and Rock band story...

There was a young priest in a local parish trying to put together a "folk mass" band. A girl singer I know asked if I'd consider playing guitar for them. Well I went to a meeting and talked with the priest and wasn't convinced it was for me. He asked "what would it take to get you to join us?" I told him my band needed a palce to practice, my ROCK band. He said fine you can use the church hall downstairs Sunday afternoons and store your gear there as well locked up with lots of church stuff. Nice.

So a few weeks later were blasting away down there and cops show up, obviously neighbors thought we were too loud. Before they could come downstairs the young priest headed them off and said he made a deal with us and was asking them to ignore any complaints as people mowing their lawn were louder than us outside the hall. They just drove off without a word...and we continued to blast away! The moral of the story??

Jesus loves ROCK bands!! ( at least thats what I got out of it....hell our lead singer at the time looked like Jesus!!)

My most regular gig in the past decade has been in church worship bands. It was unnerving at first knowing that all those people in the audience were sober. You can't tell them, "we're gonna take a quick break, so drink up - the more you drink, the better we sound".

Frankly, I had a hard time keeping up with the whole gig because you are playing with a different group of people each week, and playing different songs each time. It was easier in the old garage band days when me and my buddies had a set of songs totally wired, and we could play them perfect no matter how messed up we were!

Playing in church taught me a lot about music and being in a band. Most of those guys are tremendous, under rated musicians.

+1 for Jesus. I've been playing in Chico's Bidwell Presbyterian for the past two years. We have a young adult service in the El Rey theatre, a cool art deco movie house. Great equipment, digital board, wonderful team.

I agree about the rapid prototyping and development environment. I mean, we get to practice one night, then again the morning of the service, then play once. Bang zoom. I'm sure this is exactly like working in the Saturday Night Live band.

Can't agree more. The thing that struck me was that there was no where to hide, no safe zone. A lot of sus and altered chords too - it does force you to become better very quick.

Our leader was a graduate of Julliard and a phenomenal pianist with perfect pitch. She would be playing in a certain key and on the fly transpose to a different key to match the singer - and would expect all of us to follow. Yeah, I crashed more than once trying to figure alternate fingerings of the altered chords.... Definitely a lot of talent in the churches.

I'll be the first to admit that churches are full of hypocrites.

Good upstanding Christians give the rest of us dirty rotten sinners a bad reputation. I've tried and tried to be perfect, but I just can't seem to pull it off.

Yep. Church is just another networking opportunity for them.
