SUCCESS!

Post by Vectorer »

I went out today and got a new resistor 470 OHM 2 Watt and replaced that dubious resistor in the C4 circuit. Sounds great now.

When I have the amp at maximum volume it distorts a little. What function does the feedback trimpot serve?

I really appreciate all the help and patience with a newbie like me.

The trim pot adjusts the amount of output signal being fed back into the preamp.

The previous R10 was a 470k ohm, so only 1000 times too big. No worries about any damage to the 6V6. The question is, is there a 470 ohm somewhere it doesn't belong, or is it just a case of a wrong-value part supplied?

Yes that resistor was definitely the problem! I ended up building a dim bulb tester too to be on the safe side and I was very relieved when my 72 watt bulb (go try to find a straight up 100 watt bulb at Home Depot) come on real dim after I flipped the switch!

I learned some valuable lessons from this first build! It feels good to see my son be excited about the amp too!

Thanks again to all of you who contributed and to Steve for guiding me.

It was simple wrong part supplied. Every other resistor and component matched the parts list and instructions.

I take all the credit.
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.
