There is a guy at the ReRanch forum that has done quite a few fabric coated guitars.
I think he uses the decoupage stuff which is probably what the mod podge stuff is.

But, then he finishes it with nitro lacquer and achieves a nice glossy finish that looks great.

Also I guess the Minwax Polycrylic works well for burying the fabric.

Another guy uses Origami paper and creates some great Paisley Telecasters. :D

I have a few amps and speaker cabs that I covered with "Marine Vinyl" from Fabricland. I think it is around the same price as Tolex but much softer and richer feeling. It feels really nice and classy, but because it is sort of softer and thicker than tolex, it will nick really easy. Now we use tolex, but I still love the look and feel of my marine vinyl amps.
I am tempted to try real leather some day on a head cabinet; but right now we are getting into hardwood cabinets; thanks to trainwreck tradition.
