So it's just the quality of the wire itself that is the culprit?
Does the wire you use have the vinyl sheathing under the cloth?

There was a guy here from Germany about a year ago that built a Dumble clone with cloth wire.

That thing looked like the Autobahn!
Or a Hiwatt more accurately.
All wires were bent at 90º and the insulation, which was cloth, was perfect.

I believe he said he used super glue or maybe that was someone else.

Anyway, his cloth ends were perfect! No fraying whatsoever.

I can't stand the stuff with the PVC inner coating. When I retired from the Navy in 2003 and started investing in parts, I bought 20 rolls of that stuff from CE Dist by mistake, which ended up on ebay shortly after I received it. There are also a few types of cloth covered wire that are not the push back variety which you must use strippers on that don't have the pvc coating(not sure what is in there) which are more manageable, but if you have to use strippers it sort of negates the reason for having it to me.

Yeah, I bought some of that stuff from CE. It has kind of a pseudo cloth cover over a plastic insulation. Kind of a major PITA, although the solid seems to be easier to deal with than the stranded. I am going to make do with mine, but I can understand why you would dump it. :(
