To my ears 220uf on the plates Chokes the low end
That certainly seems possible Tony. The low end should be tighter and more 'controlled' with the high values which when compared to an amp that has some 'bloom' to the low end...might sound 'choked'.

I also think that the amp type matters. High-gain MV type amps (like a SLO) get most of their tone in the preamp and pretty much run the power section clean and often like more 'hifi' qualities to the power section. That way....when you turn up the volume the tone doesn't change much...it just gets louder. Amps like old Marshalls et al are using the power section as a part of the tone generating machine and probably DON'T like too much 'hifi' character. Some of those most coveted early Marshalls had very little filtering. I try to not overdo it on any 'old style' amp I'm building.

Fish
Sure Apples and oranges..and not to get off on a tangent about caps.. Everyone has there pet peves..One of my biggest one is Filter caps..We've kind of messed around with those low profile circuit board mounted caps and in the world of circuit board design amps in order to save space and build times they are kind of a nessiciary evil..For me personally I hate em
