Hey Neal, I can't say I feel your pain. At a little more than twice your age, I can happily say I've never had a kidney stone. Oops, I probably shouldn't've said that

But I have several friends who have been through it, and I can say your chances of coming out the other end unscathed are excellent.

Feel better soon, my friend!

Dude...you're WAY too young for this. I'm with Gimp, waiting for the day but have several buddies who have had similar experiences. 4mm...wow. Just wow. Really sorry, I know that's gotta hurt.

Owww! just t'inkin' about it. Well 4 mm is just over 1/8 inch and people have had much larger. There's also the 'assumption' that kidney stones are nice and round like river rocks. Not so. Some are rather gruesome looking, with sharp corners & branches.

Carbonated bevvy's - it ain't the carbonation that does damage so letting the fizz out isn't the answer.

1987 on tour in New Zealand our crew member in charge of getting the planes unloaded came down with k-stones. While he was miserating in Auckland hospital some other crew went to the airport @ 4 AM to see the gear arrive. No problem except it was a very early wakeup call. Meanwhile "Fast Eddie" was glugging down gallons of water trying to get his rock collection to move. Lucky for him, it settled down or else the choices were 1) surgery in NZ or B) suffer thru another couple days & hope to catch a ride on a new lithotriptor machine in the USA. Of course there were none of those in NZ at the time.

So - lots of cool clear water. I'd say go distilled but no biggie if it isn't. At 4 mm your doc probably isn't thinking lithotriptor yet but you could ask. And it's a fun word to say.

I had a kidney stone almost 2 years ago. I woke up with that unimaginable pain. The pain was so intense, on the way to the hospital, my wife had to pull over so I could puke on the side of the road. At the hospital, they gave me some really good drugs which kept me comfortable and sleepy most of the day. They CT scanned me, and determined that mine was small enough to pass. And the blood work showed that I didn't have an infection. So they sent me home with pain meds and told me to pee through a strainer. I passed painlessly it an hour or so after getting home.

I sure hope I never go through that again. And I hope you are feeling better real soon.

I will tell you this (something to give you some hope). Once it passes, its done. No more discomfort (unless it scratches you on the way out). Relief was instant, and complete.

I am sorry for your pain. I'm sure it's bad. I hope there is a little room for levity on this topic. Here is a true story, somewhat abbreviated.

My nephew, with more smarts than most decided he was going to get the free windbreaker (maybe it was a hat, I don't remember) from Dannon by turning in the requisite number of foil lids from the little cups of yogurt. It was some unreasonable number. I think he was eating maybe a dozen or more yogurts each week heading towards the prize. All that calcium gave him an extra prize. We razzed him about it for years. Yeah, he got the jacket.

Dude, hope you get over it soon and prevent it in the future!

Can you explain the pictures you posted above?

Hint: Unless you stay with the same company for the rest of your life, start taking notes. Keep a photo copy of this application for future reference.

Pain, discomfort... You're not alone in experiencing such discomfort - there are a lot of us with Stories to Tell. On the other hand, this particular one is all yours. I hope you feel better soon.

Motorcycles... I've ridden for decades but when I lived in the Sacramento area, I stopped riding. I've a bike now, but am already thinking I'll be selling it if we move back to that region.

G'luck!

hey thanks Tony, i appreciate all of youse guises sympathies very much!!

the pictures above are works from my longtime friend Teddy, a sculptor/musician/performance artist i met and lived with while on a Conservation Corps work crew in the Mojave desert. he has had several residencies and commissioned art projects. i was making a joke about the snake eating its own tail after my Dr. told me that my stone was likely caused by all the meds i am on due to the motorcycle misfortune and prescribing MORE meds to deal with the side effects. i hadn't changed my diet or water intake, the only variable is the introduction of medications...

it jogged my memory that he had done a series of ouroboros sculptures while in the Netherlands. i wanted to make sure he wouldn't mind me posting some pictures and it took me a while to both find them and reach him, so they are somewhat out of context.

check out his website for a more detailed description and there are links to several other projects he has created. fun fact: the Brief Bird URL was inspired by a Richard Brautigan poem. we are both huge fans and send RB books to each other when we have read them.

i figured in a group of people who appreciate art (as i consider electronic projects as such) some would enjoy some interpretations of the concept...

Thanks for asking!!
neal

edit: he did some really interesting work with traffic cones too!
