I don't think China has anything on Weber as far as cheap parts go.Phil_S wrote:When I'm feeling cheap I buy caps sold by Weber.

Re: anybody use these 'lytics?
so, tested them all with a capacitance/ESR meter along with a variety of 450v caps: atoms, rubycon, IC, xicon for meter reference
the capacitance checks out on most all of them, aside from the atoms which all read above 45uf with a nominal of 30....
ESR readings
Atoms: 1.7-2 ohms
Rubycon: 1.6-3.1 ohms
IC: 3.5 ohms
xicon: 1.6-2.3 ohms
Elum: .68-1.8 ohms
all of the Elum 33uf tested at the .68 ohm mark. these were the lowest values recorded from probably the cheapest caps! looking pretty good by these numbers. still need to charge them up to 400v though...

IMO, the big difference, and this is important, is that when you find you got counterfeits from China, who will you go to for recourse? I'd like to think that Weber will stand behind what it sells and the price differential is trivial between the two.steveneddy wrote:I don't think China has anything on Weber as far as cheap parts go.Phil_S wrote:When I'm feeling cheap I buy caps sold by Weber.

I've never been attracted to buy capacitors on flea-bay. Stick with reliable distributors. I'll count ApexJr among them.
Ebay is ok, if you know the store. JEA capacitors.. I buy some stuff from Debco in Columbus Oh. Met them through a ham fest. Quite a few places that have good caps. I have been finding a lot of the IC caps leaking in many of the fender repairs. Usually look right around where he lead comes out. Buying caps from Just radios, mainly because the caps are good, and they are good to deal with. Price is good too. But mostly the values are more correct. Those links posted,, yep rubycon I don't believe has an axial cap for years. And that was a big stink on them loading the radial inside the axial.

Richie I know what leaky IC caps you are talking about and I think Fender bought a bad bunch or perhaps even a counterfeit bunch of caps. Every single IC cap I've ever seen has the logo in italics like "IC" and not just "IC" as I've seen consistently on those bad Fender caps. They're (the ones in those Fender's) are the only one's I've seen them fail like that.
I don't want to sound like too much of a fanboy, TBH I'm not that attached to IC over any other brand (as long as I know what I'm using is reliable). Most anything you get from CE is at least of passable quality and IC just happens to be the brand that makes decent quality inexpensive electrolytics so I use them often. More often than not capacitors fail because of bad circuit design and not because the part is faulty; they're tested at the factory and QC does a good job of weeding out the bad parts quickly.

Unfortunately Phil - that was not my experience with them in the past.Phil_S wrote:IMO, the big difference, and this is important, is that when you find you got counterfeits from China, who will you go to for recourse? Unfortunate, indeed.

Hmmm....I wonder if things just aren't the same since Ted Sr. died. It's a shame.steveneddy wrote:Unfortunately Phil - that was not my experience with them in the past.

That's sort of what I've heard. I hear a lot of both good and bad about them but have no personal experience, I try to stick with CE/AES and Mouser (Mag Inc for transformers) and can hit up my speaker reconing guy for good deals on old speakers. Not sure what else Weber offers that others don't but I've never needed to use them as of yet..Phil_S wrote:Hmmm....I wonder if things just aren't the same since Ted Sr. died.
