don't waste your time on the cheap boards http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-HTUR-A not very good

I've used these on several builds and never had any issues (using eyelets).

Not too bad, although the filter caps don't fit on the two inner terminals. Other than that, I haven't run into any real problems...yet. Still just mounting components, though.
I was using boards like the one from Weber and they are just OK. I think they are not as nice as a real turret board. (Also, you can buy the same board on eBait direct from China for half the price, postage included.)

I found for about $10 you can buy a real generic turret board: http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-HTUR-60 I used one of these in my last build and liked it a lot better and it is worth the extra few dollars. Because it has lots of unused holes, I was able to add a few turrets in key locations to make it more suitable for my needs. Of course, YMMV.

One thing I don't want to do is drill and stake my own board. The fiberglass is supposed to be carcinogenic if you breathe it in, and I don't have the proper dust collection system to be working with it. Once in a while I drill an extra hole keeping the drill at slow speed to control the flying dust. It is wise to wear a proper mask when drilling.
Thank you much for the useful info! I'll be sure to use one of those on the next build.

Eyelets

Post by husky »

Having gone back and forth many times I far prefer eyelets.
I drill a small hole next to the eyelet or turret and feed the connecting buss wires up through that to bend in to the eyelet or wrap around the post from the top. I use Nylon tubing on the underside around the buss. No danger of anything falling thru. Turrets always seem like a pain cause they fill up with solder if using the center hole.

+1!!!

My first two builds were done with turrets, and I had a hell of a time working with them. I then switched to PTP and after that finally came the eyelets. They have been the most accommodating way I've ever done things on a board and they allot more space internally than a turret. I'm just not a fan of wrapping wire around turrets and when using parts with thicker leads, they fill up very quickly. To each his own. :)

I prefer eyelets and for the B+ you can get larger eyelets if you need to.

Maybe it's just tube depot, but the turrets I was using damn near almost doubled in price recently. Hence I've been using eyelets more often lately, but I can use either and be pretty happy.

Turrets from Hoffman are definitely the best in my opinion, simply because of the price and because I've never had one oxidized/corroded.

Yeah, I like Hoffman's turrets real well!

And he actually has a computer program for designing your own turret boards which is pretty cool under "Design your own turret board".

Since I don't currently own a drill press, I use his staking tool to install the turrets. Works great.

And I saw Hoffman's turret board material with a simple hacksaw and it works great. Super quick and no real dust ...... just a few crumbs from it.
Sawing the length of the 12" board in this photo took maybe 20 seconds.

With respect, 10thtx

I like turrets way better than eyelets also

I have turrets and board listed here if you need them

http://www.hoffmanamps.com/MyStore/catalog/parts12.htm

And as was mentioned above, you can even design your own turret board layout and my CNC machine will make it for you.

That custom program is here.

Wow, pretty pricey at .46 each and .395 per 100

I know where you can get turrets for .15, .13 and .11 each

are they the same Keystone brand turrets with the same shape?
i have found some of the cheaper turrets more difficult to apply solder to. these, the solder flows easy
if u know where to get them - spill the beans dont keep it a secret :o
