Reversed capacitors

Post by cornel moldovan »

Sorry, but you made a mistake...i noticed it at the first sight... your coupling caps must be turned 180 degrees ,cos in this manner you have hum noise ... the marked side must be soldered to the plate...AM I RIGHT OR WRONG? [/b]

On the subject of the small special, I got to play a Morgan SW50 which is a sort-of clone of a Small Special that came in to Morgan's shop last year. It's not an exact clone, uses Jupiter yellow caps throughout for example, but otherwise looks pretty close. I was quite surprised how the amp sounded and felt, plenty of really warm clean breakup at reasonable volume levels. There is almost no high end filtering going on in these things (no snubbers, no grid stopper on V1B, and a 100pf bright cap that is always engaged, switch can add another 250pf), but the amp was not harsh in the least. Stock JJ preamp and Tung-Sol re-issue 5881's. Comments on where the mojo is coming from in these things? I have not built one, but hearing that amp may change my mind.
Jelle, do you get this amp up and running yet?

I guess that depends on the goal... The idea here was to make a small special clone with a twist, the jfet. The original amps have it the way it was done here.

No error, design choice from our end. No hum, either...

I need a little bit of speaker advice. I just bought a Reason Elite 2X12 from Anthony. I have one EV 12 Force speaker. What would you pair it with? I do have a WGS ReaperHP 50W speaker, but that would limit the cabinet to 100W, marginal at best with this amp.
