In very old designs (1940's) before indirectly heated cathode rectifiers became commonplace, the B+ would be pulled from the centertap of the 5V winding.
This helps a bit with noise on the B+ line by both balancing the filament, and by the series inductance of the winding acting as a choke.

With indirectly heated cathodes that are connected to pin 8, the B+ being pulled from pin 8 allows either type to be interchangeable.
