Power filtering more or less and why?

Post by CapnCrunch »

Hey all,

I am trying to understand the effect of increased power filtering. One of the main differences between the Rocket and an AC30 is the increased filtering in the rocket. Why did Ken do this? What effect does it have.

In general, what effect could you expect in other topologies, i.e. like in a 5e3 deluxe.

It will make the bass tighter and have an overall stiffness in the feel of the amp.
As mentioned before most tube rectifiers have a maximum cap value that can be used on the first filter cap.

The extra caps make a larger reservoir for storing current so when you play heavy it won't sag and compress as much.

Don't let that smoke out!

Amps with robust supplies are more sensitive to what's coming in -whether it be just a gtr and cable or laden w/efx. My experience is that they sound better for an efx front end, that is, the amp is more of a flat canvas for the input, and doesn't sag out when pushed.
