Which piece to use for the top of Diana's cab, the one on the right or the one on the left?

The one one the right, looks less like a bunch of boards glued together. Is this Aspen?

It's the plantation cherry from Woodcraft.

A trick I use to check out nice wood grain is to wipe the wood down with naphtha.
It will darken to wood to approximate what it would look like with a clear coat on it.
It can really help you make decisions such as the one you are pondering now.
Try it, you'll like it.

Use Tom's suggestion- these cherry boards take stain very unevenly. Some look nice and some kinda gnarled looking. I have used 2 of the drawers as wreck cabs to rather uneven results. The price is right, but if you spend $200-$300, you will have something that will you will always be happy with. I will probably replace the drawer cab on my Express, and will use fine cherry cabs built by a proper furniture cabinet maker (which is not me!)

I had to put a coat of 1 pound shellac on the two drawer head cabs I put together, as this allows the stain to color evenly. If not, what Ron Worley said happens for sure...uneven stain.

The Woodcraft cab is a temporary home; I picked up a really nice board of curly maple this weekend and today, got a small Delta table saw and stand for $40 from Craigslist...got my sander, and a Porter Cable biscuit joiner, so next weekend, I'll be busy, though I may use the maple to build a cab for the Carol-Ann, and the padauk for Diana.

I used the woodcraft drawer cab on one amp and it worked out well, not as nice as other woods but still is sturdy construction and one could always tolex or use the bedliner stuff for non tradional TW look.
