Anyone try Weber's Michigan (EV copy) but with a neo mag?
Doing a bit of research for a buddy who loves the EV tone with an ODS clone but the weight...
I suggested having Weber make one with a neo mag.
The name comes up a lot but I cant find any reviews on it yet alone any clips or comparisons in that type amp.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks

but I have swapped the EV12Ls in our small PA speakers with Eminence DELTALITE-II 2512. The weight reduction is a major releif (for +45 years seasoned players like myself) and the tone is on par with the EVs.
Another EV 12L alternative is the Eminence KAPPALITE 3012HO. Haven't heard the light version, but the Old Kappa 12" sounds a lot like the EV 12L.

Yeah, I wanted to try the Delta Pro but it only comes in 8 ohm.

Eminence does not recommend using those in an open back.bluesfendermanblues wrote:

Have tried the Eminence Tonker Lite in a 12 and thought it was pretty cool.. A bit brighter than the Celestion 65 H's everyone here loves so give em some break in time.. We did an A/B test right next to each other... other than that pretty close in overall tone.. Henry's right closed back seems best for the Neo's.. To me... We are doing a Tomo Fujita Model single ended combo pratice amp and thought it did a decent job and may go with it... He's testing it out now.. the weight is always a ++++++...

Re: Anyone try Weber's Michigan (EV copy) but with a neo mag?
My friend finally got a response from Webers guy that is doing emails named Akbar.
He said that Ted was working on the Michigan with a neo mag before his health went south and its one of the unfinshed designs on the table now.
he said they will have it tweaked when Ted gets round to it.
He suggested in the meantime get a neo 12 which is a cali 12 or JBL copy witha neo mag. I dont think this is what my friend wants.
I told him to either roll with the EVM or get some Tonkerlites like Henry uses. Heck, Thats what I want to try in my Carr/tweaked by Henry. Sure would be nice to take 10 lbs off a 2/12! He said he tried a tonkerlite in an amp and it has too much upper mids. I dont think he'd have that problem in our D- style amps. He's probably reading too much on the internet forums. Maybe he could have my weber g1265's and buy me a pair of tonkerlites?

I move my gear, thiele & PA cabs with a hand truck, and like the EVMs. So an additional 10 or 20 lbs doesn't mean much. my .02 cents
Re: Anyone try Weber's Michigan (EV copy) but with a neo mag?
The early Neo's to me were always a bit on the bright and midrangy side.. (More than likely due to the increase in gauss from the stronger magnet..) This tends to also amplify those unwanted frequency's 1K area... They have improved them dramatically over the last couple years...But still not have it perfected yet in my opinion.. The stronger magnet also speeds up the movement of the cone which also changes the feel to me.. After you break them in they do smooth out a bit but to me never do feel like a worn in softer feel ceramic.. Maybe one day they will perfect it.. Close but still no cigar yet..

I tried a pair of the Tonkerlites and really didn't care for them.
Like Tony said, they were a bit on the bright side, heavy in the mids and didn't have very good bottom end at all.
The weight savings was a huge plus, I just wish I could love the tone.
Now I have two EVM 12L's that I love, but they are HEAVY!

Thes days I only use the Tonkerlite when weight is critical, my speaker of choice is the WGS BL80. It's not quite as Hi-Fi as the Tonkerlite and more versatile for multiple styles.sidehatch wrote:My friend finally got a response from Webers guy that is doing emails named Akbar.

Cool, Thanks for all the responses. I'll pass that along to him.
I'd like to hear some EVM's in my carr but even though I use a hand truck just getting it out of the back of my subaru wrx would wear me out before the gig.
I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a nice 1/12 cab and get a single EV and that way I can add it to the Weber G1265's in my amp.
I had a fuchs years ago(that was in a Bassman chassis with a 4 ohm tap and had an 8ohm EV. It really didnt sound right so I tried a weber California that was 4 ohms. I didnt like that either and chalked it up to not liking the Fuchs. Looking back I bet it was the speakers that I didnt like. The mismatch on the EV probably made it not sound its best and the Cali was probably not right for it. I should have gotten another EV and a 2x12 or had weber make a 4ohm EV clone.

It's not an EV style, but the Weber Ceramic Blue Dog sounds really good in an ODS combo. I believe they are modelled after the Celestion Blue Alnico and I read a pretty good review of them somewhere or other. I tried a JBL D120 F, a Celestion G1265H, a Weber California 12, an Eminence Wizard and a Tonkerlite, and I kept coming back to the Blue Dog, it just sounded the best.
Re: Anyone try Weber's Michigan (EV copy) but with a neo mag?
Man, that's hard for me to picture. I've got an AlNiCo Blue Dog in my Bad Cat, and I've plugged it into my D'Lite for a bit...way too bright. But all amps are different, just as all tastes are.pine wrote:It's not an EV style, but the Weber Ceramic Blue Dog sounds really good in an ODS combo.
