Where do you get ports suitable for a 1x12 closed back cab?

Post by Guitarman18 »

I'm in the throws of building a 1x12 closed back D' style cab and am in need of some suitable bass ports. Does anyone know the brand, material and/or suppliers that will have what I will need for this project?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer on this one.

Cheers, Paul.

Parts Express has some nicely finished parts. Alternately, 3.5" PVC pipe plus liquid nails from lowes/hd is good too.

That's great, thanks for the help jaysg. I wouldn't be at all surprised if HAD used just regular PVC pipe. In light of the D cab discussion on another thread where Funk mentioned some of HAD's cab construction methods, it's sounds like just the kind of thing he would do. I could be wrong?

Cheers, Paul.

Actually I think HAD used 3/5" cardboard ports in his cabinets. Seems I remember Brandon mentioning that once. Nothing but the best parts for a Dumble.....

Hard cardboard that's 3" ID will work-I think the realthing had these-someone else that's measured one might know for sure. Hard cardboard tubes that have the 'saran wrap' the local grocer uses on them are just about the perfect material, can be cut to length, heavy duty, glue in well. The Hermidas are 4" ID plastic. If u want to get into the physics of cabinet building, check the details out. Remember, the smaller the total port area=the lower the lowpass frequency that is reinforced by the port.

Is that an actual Dumble cab? Any idea how deep the ports are?

This is my bass cabinet wip a few years back. The stuff I used may be ABS, not PVC now that I think about it.

If you want to dabble with ported cabinet design (or if you want 3" pipe and can only get 4" :D) here's an excellent piece of free software to do all the messy Theile port tuning calculations for you:

I have no affiliation with these guys but I've used their product.

Wow, thanks for the info guys. :) I was drawing a blank trying to find larger diameter ports, particularly locally. Most of them seem to be for PA or HiFi. As it turns out I have some cardboard tube left over from when I had a carpet fitted. Could be the same stuff! If it works for the big guy I'm sure it will be good enough for me.

I'll post pics when I'm done.

Cheers, Paul.

Just tried the design program.
Apparently it is made for Hi Fi speakers as none of the popular guitar speakers are loaded.
So that means you have to load all the speaker parameters manually.

This is true. Fortunately, many of the manufacturers provide the T-S parameters so you can plug them in and add them to the database.

As a last resort (I've done this as well), Weber provides a fairly straight forward method of measuring the T-S parameters of a speaker here:

I tried punching in the specs for the EVM 12L and it would not accept the Q parameters that I used. I don't know why but I'm stuck on that since it won't allow me to save the data because of that.

Which version of WINISD do you use? I've stuck with 0.44 available at http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?download=winisd I seemed to have trouble getting the other ones to work.

I think this version has the EVM12L ProLine and Series II already in the library.
