Probably a stupid question...

Hi guys,

I have what is probably a stupid question. I was playing my Ceriatone Liverpool yesterday. I finally found a nice tube complement/ speaker combination for it. She really sounded awesome. (I've had mine modded to be more Trainwreck correct...Moose trannies, etc.) Anyway, while playing loudly, all of a sudden, the sound just stopped. It was so loud, I was in the other room. I walked back in, expecting a blown fuse. Nope. It was super-quiet, but I could hear my playing through the tranny. After some trouble-shooting, I discovered that my left (while looking directly at the back) speaker jack had died. When I plugged into the right one, the Pool sounded killer again. Anyway...

Obviously the amp needs to be serviced. My question is if I'm going to hurt the amp by playing it through the right jack? I'm thinking it's probably just a cold solder joint or something on the left jack. I just don't really want to stop playing it before I can find a decent tech in my area to fix the jack. What do you guys think?

Hard to say with out seeing it. I know I don't care for the jacks used by Ceriatone. I use Switchcraft and a shorting jack for the first one "ala fender".

I am pretty sure the ceriatone jacks are not shorting style and there for the right one is the same as the left so you can use either safely. It is not good to have an open load on the OT though. So I would check it out pronto.

Open it up and look at the speaker jack. Is anything obviously wrong? If so, fix it. If not, try reflowing the solder joints to that jack and to the other end of all wires going to it. See if that helps...

You aren't going to hurt anything by using the other jack, they're wired in parallel I believe.

But I would replace the jack with a shorting version, Switchcraft is definitely the way to go....

Hopefully you didn't hurt your output transformer when this happened.
Not sure what Nik used in those. Is it a Cliff or Cliff type jack?

What would have died?

I had a faulty speaker cable before that had me scratching my noggin.

What had happened is that one of my TAD 6L6 tubes redplated.
So I swapped some known good 6L6's into it and no sound.....

The speaker cable had worked fine for years so I didn't even suspect that. I thought I had fried my OT.

Then just for giggles I swapped it for another cord, damn....

I took the plugs apart and the center conductor had broken.

I hate coincidences like that.

Nik uses the cliff style jacks in his builds.

I told him about my express noise problems which figured out was a bad shielded wire from input to pin 7 on V1 on my ceriatone built Express. After I made up a new wire the amp was singing nicely. My caps fall apart as well because they use double sided black tape and the glue lets go. I had also thought about going through and replacing all the jacks.
