My latest build

Post by glasman »

Here is my latest toy. A bit of a radical departure for me, no reverb, no loop etc. It does sound great!! 100 watts, 6L6's. BTW the CF resistors have been replaced with the "Holy Dales".

Let me know what you think.....

Yes those are XICON's. A combination of MPP and PP caps. They sound pretty good. I don't think they are as big sounding as the OD 715's and 716's I have used in the past. Part of it could also be that I normally use a .01uf -> 250K mid section and this amp uses a .047uf -> 100K. As such the knee of the mid range control cuts a bit (or a lot) of the bass out.

But overall I am very very pleased with the tone. The OD just sounds right out of the box, no tweaking (at least yet).

I would like to build another one and use PS caps to compare the tone.

I will post some clips this weekend. Now it is time to go build a cabinet to house the beast. This is going into a 1x12 combo cab.

The other advantage of the Xicon's is that they are SO SMALL!!

Hi Gary,

nice work!

What are these Holy Dales?

I see you have some sort of high pass filter before the OD input trimmer. What value do you use for the cap?

Cheers,

Thanks Dominik. This was about the easiest amp I have built. From cutting the boards to soldering the last connection it was less than a 1 week of spare time.

I am referring to the Vishay Dale RN65 resistors. They appear in the later Dumble amps.

Right now it is a .022uf in parallel with a 4M7 resistor. Trims the bass a touch going into the overdrive section. I may remove it as I experiment more with the amp. It seems to work pretty well.

You must have done a whole lot of "right" things then. That's never happened to me. :)

Great looking build, Gary!!! I assume clips are forthcoming, eh? ;)

Gary, whats with the little disc caps across the diodes on the board on the far back right of the chassis?

They are used to eliminate any switching noise that is caused by the diodes. This is a pretty common practice. The diodes themselves are UF4007's.

Hey Norm, I think the fact that it uses input from 3 years of asking lot s of questions and experimenting a lot probably helps. :)

The OD has a different signature than I have heard in other builds. N0 buzz and very hard to describe.

Gary,

You've outdone yourself on this build. Very neat and clean. Any sound clips in the works? We'd all love to hear it. Thanks for sharing. 8)

Thanks Bob, and I hope to record a couple of clips tomorrow. I am in the middle of the woodworking part and hope to have the cabinet done tomorrow. 1x12 loaded with an EVM 12L.

I was under the impression that if you used 1N4007s you needed the caps. but that the UF4007s had them built in.
