Dumble tone from Sonny Landreth's Demeter rig.

Post by BobW »

I will move this thread over to the garage talk, but for now here goes. My #124 build is on hold with my work load, and in addition to my vacation to New Orleans. After visiting my friends and relatives I was able to take the following pics at The Rock n Bowl in New Orleans during the last Jazz Fest weeked. Sonny Landreth hasn't played his Dumble for the last year during performances in New Orleans. He still uses his 70W Demeter and an array of effects from guitar to amp(Boss Delay, Keeley Compressor, Zen Drive, and Boss Tuner). The cab looks like his 2 12" Dumble cab. It was a great show with Tab Benoit head lining, and Sonny was asked to join Tab onstage.

Sonny likes his Zen Drive pedal, and was able to nail the Dumble tone with his rig. I was able to talk with him after the show. A real nice guy, and quite an amazing player! The pics came out pretty good, you can see the amp settings. 8)

BobW,

Great pics! Were you able to catch Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen while you were down there? One of my favorite funk singers/piano players. Let the good times roll.......

No Stelligan, I missed him, and believe he was on another stage on another day. I only attended the last Sunday.

Sonny is releasing a new CD out later this month called, "From The Edge", featuring Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Dr. John, and Vince Gill.

This guy is playing with good company, and am happy another Louisiana boy is doing well. Tab Benoit also won a Handy award last week in Tunica, MS. My band got to play at the Clarksdale, MS festival. It was a great week! 8)
Too bad I am now back at work.

Sunny Landreth in "Guitar Player" this month

Post by RJ Guitars »

I've been reading the latest guitar player... I know .

There is a really good article on Sunny Landreth this month. He talks a lot about his Dumble amp and it seems he really loves it.

He's got a new album out with some help from Clapton, Knofler, E. Johnson, Robben Ford, Vince Gill, and a few other names you'd recognize. I just ordered it from Amazon so I don't know how it sounds yet.

He talks a lot about his Dumble and his gear. I thought it was especially interesting that he mentions he prefers closed back cabinets and has a strong liking for Vintage 30 Celestions. He refers to his Dumble cabinet as a closed back cabinet with a port in the back.

He did mention the Demeter Amp but indicated that most of his new album was with the Dumble.

Some other great stuff on his pedal choices (Zen Drive) and such, but a surprisingly good read from Guitar Player mag.

Sonny at Ottawa Bluesfest

Post by mdroberts1243 »

I talked briefly to Sonny after his performance at the Ottawa BluesFest in July. He was using the Demeter with a Fender combo as the speaker cabinet. He said the Demeter was an amp he had owned for years and was substituting for the Dumble which was returned for repair. His tone was good (I thought) but he complained that the speakers in the Fender were old and sounding tired.

I had been looking forward to hearing his Dumble, sigh.

Couple of pics attached...

Sonny sounds like Sonny and nobody else sounds like Sonny.

I saw him at a festival a while ago. He was playing through a borrowed Marshall. He covered most of "South of I-10", he nailed the tone.

I saw him the other night at The Iron Horse. He plugged into the Demeter using the speakers of the Twin Reverb. Sonny tone. Only part of it is the amp. The delay is pretty important although I'm sure the delay setting matters more than which delay he uses.

Normally I'll look at a guitar player's left hand to see what he's playing. With Sonny it's all about his right hand. They say, "Spankin' the plank!". Sonny takes that one to heart.

I just got the new album - "From the reach" awesome stuff. Sunny has awesome tone and style all across the album. I especially liked the Clapton touch on "When I still had you". This song has got a lot of radio play potential and his vocals are fantastic.

I didn't especially like tone that Robben Ford was getting on his cut... but for the most part the entire album is a total tone-fest. There is also some great piano and vocals by Dr, John... one of the best albums I've purchased recently.

We saw him this summer at Blues on the Green here at Zilker Park Austin. He was using the Dumble and it looked like a Dumble 1x12 cab.

So HAD still works on these guys amps?

I thought he was pretty much out of it these days.

Reclusive in hiding.

I spoke to Sonny's tech at the Ottawa Blues Festival and he said that Sonny's ODS was back with HAD (not someone else) for repairs.

Confirmed, I spoke w/ Sonny this weekend, and HAD is working on his amp, an HRM. Attached is a pic of Sonny in Nashville (9_29_08) 8)
