anyone know what kind of orange drops were in the early Bassman? were they sprague 715/716 series?

I don't think old Bassman's had orange drops. The tweed series had Astron's and the later Blond and Black amps had The Blue Molded Caps. I believe they were Polycarbonate which are no longer made.
If you want the old sound you might try Sozo's, or Mallory polyester caps. Sprague would be the PS series , but definitely not 715 or 716 series, those are Polypropylene and sound the least like the old Bassman type caps.

I had an early Victoria Bassman and it had custom Spragues that looked like they were the PS series. So I think they should get you close to the sound of an old Bassman. Mark went to great lengths to make his amps as close to original as he could.

check my bandmaster post it has the molded blue caps i posted a couple gut shots you could zoom in on. it used mallory for electrolitics, i replaced the filter caps with F&T and the signal chain with Sprague Atoms.
