I like the scumbacks, in fact have them in two of my cabs..but if you listen to the clips in the post I made here "Speaker Taster" I think most would agree they definitely don't sound exactly the same as pre-rolas. That isn't to say what they do sound like is good nor bad..but different. The clips were posted originally posted by the owner of scumback. That said..I think they are very good..but I personally NEVER heard a 2x12, --or 4x12 for that matter-- nor do I anticipate that I ever will, cabinet that will "romp all over" a good basketweave pre-rola Marshall cabinet. Of course what one finds pleasant to ones ear is totally subjective and I realize that.

Billyz, Great to hear you like them. I rustled around in the old posts &
found a May 2006 thread that also supports Scumbacks. The prices were
disarming to Philmanatee, LOL, those were much richer dollars 2 years ago.

I'm gonna finish breaking in the two Tone Tubbies I just bought before I
buy another $500 bux worth of speax. I loaded them in a semi-opened
back Sunn 2 X 12" cab rather than my '62 Bassman cab to get the effect
of the TT's cabinets. I mixed a ceramic with an AlNiCo at the recommendation of a couple guitarists whose judgement I respect.

They're a little stiff yet and not as creamy in the 5Khz+ range as I'd hoped but I attribute that to their newness. (I haven't drilled 'em with
the Express yet. Might be a whole 'nuther story. )

Here's the M55 being discussed by Philmanatee & gnugear[names I haven't seen here in a while]. No mention of the power rating other
than "High".

A follow up to the Scumback. I had Ted Weber build me a G12h30 / 55 hz pre Rola treatment. It's sounds very good too, After quite a bit of Break in.

quite a bit less $$$.

I have owned quite a few old Marshall cabs and played even more. My favorite is the tall cab with leather handles and 20w alnico celestions. It has a series of small ports in the back.

The 2x12 Z best cab is really a marvel. I think it may be based on the EV TL806 x 2.

scumback with express

Post by stanb »

the express uses two el34 , don't they put out over 30 watts of power?
if you use a m75 or m55 in a 1-12 combo will the express let the magic
smoke out of them ? the m75 is rated at 25 watts right
what scumback would you put in 1-12 combo ? and still get that gb tone

I believe Jim (Southbay Amp Works) can make 65watt versions of the speakers without effecting tone.

Actually, 25, 65 and 100 watt versions, now that the new 100 watt voice coils sound like the 65 watt models.

The low power models are a hair brighter than Pre Rola's, when they break in (20-30 hours of stage volume playing, longer at lower levels) they are real close.

The 65 watt models have a tiny bit more bass and a tiny bit less treble. Just move the bass know down 1-2 numbers and the treble up one or two, and that's about all it takes.

The 100 watt models sound like the 65 watt versions, at most, roll down the bass from 5 to 4.5 on the knob.

Hope that helps. If not...email me from the site.

scumback with express

Post by stanb »

does 65 watt breakup much later than the 25 watt ,or are pretty
close ? with a express running 30 watts would the 25 watt m75 be
running hot at 3/4 volume ? or should I not even think about the
25 watt in an express with el34 ?

The 65 watt stays cleaner a little longer than the 25 watt, but not a whole bunch. I wouldn't consider using a single 25 watt M75 with an express at that volume. Better to get the 65 watt model.

Jim (Scunback speakers) has his speakers made by Weber to his specks of corse. The guy's over at the metro amp forum has come up with a recipe http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?t=9694 for what they call a prerolla celeston speaker its made by weber as well.

I can personally say I own a pair of china green back and they sound like pooop that was until i done a prerola treatment to them the one thing I dont recomend is using a veriac but just hook them up to house reciever and play at a 1/3 volume.
I used acatone on the dope to losen it up be carefull and not get it on your cone it will loosen up the fibers and use a small paint brush to apply it with it made all the difference in the world in the way they sound.I only have a pair and they will rattle the windows in my home with the bass they now have..
I found the link http://www.unclespot.com/C10Q.html
Oh almost forgot it will turn the dope a white color until it dries back up again. Hope this helps you out and if your worried about doing it try it on any new cheep speaker that has dope around the edge and watch the it move more and more as the dope losens up.I play my china green backs every day and have ben doing it for months with no problems at all. My amp is a JTM45 and I like it loud.

Acetone is an old hifi trick to Age/breakin the speaker faster. same with the filament transformer.

I ordered a british series 1230-55 with the pre-Rola treatment from Ted and after about 10 hours of playing it really sounds right. I have always liked the Celestion Green/Blackback g12h 30 w the 55hz cone. The Scumback H55 is just as good, and I do Like the Weber too. Mixing the 55 with a 75 is magic though.

I've got four of the 65 watt Scumbacks in a 4x12 cab.

Before that I had four of the early 1990's English made G12M 25W Greenbacks in a 4x12.

The 65W Scumbacks don't break up much later than the 25W Greenbacks at all. When I ordered the Scumbacks this crossed my mind a few times. But I knew from clips and other peoples responses that I could get good tone with them one way or the other. I just didn't know how good the tone would be. They do the 25W Greenback thing better than the Greenbacks do. Maybe they do break up a bit later than the 25W Greenbacks but as I say not by a lot. That detail, although very close, is practically irrelevant IMO because they do everything else so much better than the greenback anyways. Capable of more subtlety and articulation than the greenbacks that's for sure. One of these days I'll get the cash to put 8 of the lower power handling, 25 watt Scumback M75's in two (2) 4x12 cabs and that should be like a direct injection of some extremely potent drug. Would I ever go back to Celestion? Not in a million years. Jim is my Speaker guy to teh 4EVAR.

I have 3 2 x 12 cabs.
1 w/ h75,H55 Scumbacks 65w
1 w/heritage 12m,12h
1 w/chinese 12m,70th ann 12h
I like the sound of the Scumbacks with my 2 Expresses.
Close 2nd is the chinese 12m,70th annv.12h.
I haven't tried the 30 watt Scummies but i would like to.
With my 5o watt Plexi the celestion cabs win however.
