Traynorwreck express

Post by ronh »

I just finished rebuilding a Traynor YGA-1 amp into an express. Using this chassis caused some problems that I had to make adjustments for.
Tranny and tube locations, PS caps and pot locations are different than the express layouts show. One problem was major parasitic oscellations.
So I made the following changes to the layout. V1 uses only half the tube and both halves of V2 are used. This amp is very quiet for such a high gain amp. One problem I still have is a high pitched whine that is controlled by the presence pot. Turn the pot to 0 and the noise goes away. I mounted the 100k feedback resistor on the output jack, lower signal level going to the PI should help with noise. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause/cure?

This amp sounds great. It is not a express clone due to the output trannys impedance. I measured it at 5k, The only numbers on the tranny is 3K1033. This tranny is not the original tranny for this amp.

This amp is loud, bright in a good way, touch sensitive and dynamic. :D
I wish my guitar playing skills were a match for this amp!

Here is a shot of the amp. I must say that rebuilding an amp into another type is not the way to go. A clean build is quicker. I had the parasites real bad. But it is a cheap way of doing it.

I thinking of getting an OT with the right impedance. Having gone this far might as well go all the way.

Sounds like you need to switch the primary leads on the plates of the output tubes. Your negative feedback is probably positive at the moment.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

Hi jjman. I tried reverseing the OT primary wires. It made it worse. I moved some of the wiring around in the hope its a layout problem. Just have not had the time to try the amp out yet. Thank you for your idea.

I have a BassMaster I thought about doing this with, but have left it alone. I think you're right - its tough to "circuit bend" an existing amp very far. I may still mod my BassMaster to Plexi specs but I think that is a much more natural mod.
Let that boy boogie woogie.
