Criticality of filter cap values
All,
It looks like one of the filter caps in my D'Lite is unreliable. I have a pair of 100u/350V caps in series up front, and four 22u/500V caps for each of the following sections.
The 22u/500V caps aren't readily available from Mouser. Is it worth it trying to find that exact value elsewhere, or are 20u/500V caps sufficient?
Thanks!

It does matter if your the kind who can:
1... Hear a sparrow fart from 100 yards away.
2... Hear the difference between tolexed and untolexed cab.
3... Swear that the $300 wood knobs you've installed do make the amp sound smoother.
I can't hear any diff between 20uF or 22uF but you might.

perhaps.
Individualism more likely.
I would sub the 20uF and see if you can hear a difference. As you know what the amp sounded like before the change you'll be the first to know if it does have an effect on sound or feel. I personally haven't noticed to any great degree going from 16uF to 22uF in old Fender amps but your ears might be more sensitive to such change.

Re: Criticality of filter cap values
Since most of these caps are 20% tolerence, a 20 could be 16 to 24. Don't worry about it, unless you really CAN hear a sparrow fart

Re: Criticality of filter cap values
I've seen Dumbles with 20uf there. I have also seen them with series 47uf. I have also seen a rare one with series 33uf!! So there you go..... You may prefer 20uf. Which also may actually measure higher than the cap you are replacing.

Thanks all! I didn't figure 10% would matter given the typical manufacturing tolerances, but then I'd never have expected 10pF here and there to make much of a difference either...and I learned differently.

Good point. My "300uf" cap substitutes are marked 290uf (-10 +50).Bob-I wrote:Since most of these caps are 20% tolerence, a 20 could be 16 to 24. Don't worry about it, unless you really CAN hear a sparrow fart

African or European?
you should hear more of a Fenderish Harmonic content from the African Sparrow and more of the Marshallish Harmonic content from the European Sparrow !

Okay, I put refried beans out on our bird feeder yesterday, and voila! Within 30 minutes you could clearly hear wind breaking from sparrow and starling alike. Admittedly, I had to be within about 50 yards before it was clearly audible.
I'd post a clip, but I really don't want to soil a good SM-57.
