Other Champ style circuits that you like?

Post by Mark »

I was wondering if anyone had good results with single ended amps other than the 5F1 and the 5F2a?

I heard a recording of a Gretsch 6150 which sounded pretty good. I had heard that the speaker is a big part of the sound.

Though I’m sure the output transformer and speaker are essential to all of these types of amps sounding great.

I love these little 2-watt monsters. One 12AX7 and one EL84. This is the circuit in my Black Butte series of modded Akai/Roberts reel-to-reel amps:

A good number of years ago I built this Univox for a fellow but with a class A output stage that used a KT66 and of course the appropriate PT and OT for that build.

It sounded glorious and went from clean to nasty ( yet with punch ) really smooth.

Speaker wise a Jensen P12Q was used and yes it was a big part of what made the amp so great.

I used a 5Y3 or a 5V4 when the fellow auditioned it and it’s hard to say which one worked better, so he left with both.

It seemed that to us when cranked up that the 5Y3 was better for humbuckers if you used the neck pickup otherwise the 5V4 was better for single coils, but then again the height that some folks adjust there pickups to and there string gauges used can make quite a difference also.

I forget the V+ differences between the two.
I should build one again just for me.

I'm fond of this little SE amp. It uses two pentodes and sounds good and loud enough for me.
