Trainwreck pots

I know this has been covered in several posts in general terms, but the question is: if you are building as close as possible to Francesca, what pots are you using?

The ClaroStat / Westalbs and PEC pots are stainless backed, and it's impossible to authentically attach a copper wire grounding buss. Dave West said that KF used cheap pots, and that using this kind of grounding scheme was a bad idea. I don't know if I agree at least on a musical level- the Express doesn't seem to suffer for it.

Also, any insights on what bias trimmer pot sources- the one with the knurled thumb wheel???

Ron, I use PEC's for my builds. KF used them later and suggested their use for the Komets. Clarostat has a solder lug that reaches around the pot and I insert a copper buss rod and soder it to the lugs. You can do a search of any of the TW clones I've built in the last here on this forum for a close up.

I also Have the original (only a few) CTS "pick-a-shaft" pots the KF used on the originals.

I wanted to match the original layout as much as possible including the soldered on buss bar. I got some CGE pots from Metro amps, and they actually hand picked them for me to more closely match the values I measured on my originals. I couldn't get a reading on the volume pot in the circuit so I just went with the standard known value there. The tapers of the CGEs are a little different, and the knobs have to be in slightly different positions to most closely replicate the sounds of my original. The CGEs are a little budget looking, but they feel pretty good and no problems so far. I'm happy I used them.

Allyn is right about Ken also using the PECs. I think my Liverpool had one in it.

I've never had any pot issues with my original Wrecks. Ken picked the taper well, and Wrecks are known for a great sound with every knob on 1/2 and the bright in full position. Simple setting but it works!

Thanks for the inputs guys. Allyn, do you have a good source for these lugs (maybe you??)??

I have seen these at Ampwares, but frankly don't want to deal with that supplier anymore.

Anybody else know of a source??
