I found this old Bassman on ebay, really destroyed by poorly done mods including a replacement PT. I decided to try using the Express ckt in it.
So I gutted it and put in the board, one tube unused. The input is wired so that if I plug into #1 the V1 triodes are in parallel, plug into #2 and only one triode is active. I wired up a PPIMV which seems pretty effective so far.
It's too soon to say how it really sounds. I put in a pair of JJ EL-34's but the max bias current only gets to 28ma so I need to change out the bias range resistor. I'm running on chinese 12AX7's to see if everything checks out, so far so good.

Now I've measured the plate voltage at 417, to my mind that's a tad high. I'm thinking that I should put maybe 30V of zener on the CT to drop that down.
I'm thinking of trying to make a BF faceplate with the Fender logo modded from Bassman amp to Basswreck amp. I'm thinking I'll leave teh cab ragged.

Welcome to the dark side Bob. I think 417v will be fine. The Komet has a higher voltage & sounds great. Much like the Dumble, these are about building a good solid amp & then tweaking to personal taste unless you are building a replica. I have a tough time deciding which amp to take to the gigs. A Liverpool will be next for me.

Maybe I'll leave it then. I'm sure there are things I can do before messing with B+ Voltage anyway.Buschman wrote:Welcome to the dark side Bob. I think 417v will be fine. The Komet has a higher voltage & sounds great.
I'm in the same boat. On my list to do it to build an amp/head switcher so I can bring more than one head without hauling another cab.I have a tough time deciding which amp to take to the gigs. A Liverpool will be next for me.

Hey Bob:
What's a baseline price on a donor like that?

Re: I Wrecked my Bassman
I paid $200 for the head in pretty poor condition. The guy modded it really badly. Just for fun here's a pic of the filter cap board as I found it under the doghouse. No that lead didn't come off when I removed the board, it was hanging like that.
I swapped V1 with an EH12AX7..... then another after I couldn't control the microphonics. It's much fatter sounding now. I'll have to start going through the tubes one by one and finding the right combination, it makes a huge difference.
