Hi Phil, thanks for your very helpful post, most kind. Its not that I want to maintain the vintage aspect, rather this amp is at a stage where all the wires are quite crumbly and I fear that working in this very crowded space might make more problems than solve them.
I will switch over to a screw type similar to what Fender used on chassis, with a star ground washer and a ring lug.
Yes the mains plug has only the two outer pins active, the center is just a locator.
I have made the pigtail, it works and I now have the hot switched and fused. The ground is directly on the chassis and all working. I know its not ideal but the owner has assured me this amp will sit on a shelf and be used sparsely and only by him. The pigtail is butt jointed and soldered and has multi-layers of shrink wrap.
As regards the speakers connectors, I have the original, it works and I swapped the other end for a 1/4" jack to the speaker cabinet. I will stick with a 16ohm speaker.
I have not worked with a 6J7 preamp tube before and I do like the tone on this amp.
Appreciate your taking time to look at all this
