JJ 6L6GC

Post by Guy77 »

Has anyone else noticed a shortage of JJ 6L6GC power tubes from the popular sellers?

Cheers

I tried the Svetlana 6L6 tubes in their place and they sound very similar, they have that nice detailed sound of the JJs but one thing was missing. They are missing the extra fullness and ummph I was getting from the JJ tubes.
It was like a I went from driving my old 429 Cobra Jet 1969 Mustang fast back, 4 on the floor(bored out to 460) and the 350 in my brothers old 1972 Chevelle.
When we drove that car we would get people waving us down to jump into the back seat to go for a spin !
We sold that mustang for a joke back in the day and I hate myself for it LOL.

Where can I get my JJs?

Cheers

Have you checked Eurotubes .com , or AES?

Thanks Ian. Those are nice too. They had the extra bunch that I was getting from the JJs . The JJs just had a little more detail and a little less bass and more mids which i liked.
After trying the Svetlana I do prefer the tube you mentioned.

Hi Steven I tried AES (CE Distribution) but they were sold out two weeks ago. I will try them again this week. I may try Euro tubes.

Thanks guys.

Wondering whether you've refined the circuit voice/tuning so well to fit around the JJ sonic shape. Might you dial around either with controls or a few component tweak for a touch less overall bottom? Also if you're willing to explore more, suggest testing the current available kt77 -- My taste -- those being some of the best of 6L6 compatible tubes in production, caveat the extra heater current they require.

Or simply shop around for JJ 6L6 'til some surface.

I like the KT77s as well for a slightly different take on the 6L6GC vibe.

I just got a pair of the TAD 'black plate' 6L6s from CE after waiting a couple of weeks (and one has slightly crooked glass!) I think a lot of tubes are in short supply now due to pandemic supply chain issues (materials -> parts -> tubes -> ship to distributor -> sell to users).

Same here. I've been a fan of JJ KT77 since I bought my first batch in 2006. Was working on a couple rare Burman amps that had rattly old beat-up *real* Genelex Gold Lion '77s. The JJ's worked in them, no problem, and considerable savings over authentic Genelex.
I think a lot of tubes are in short supply now due to pandemic supply chain issues (materials -> parts -> tubes -> ship to distributor -> sell to users).
I noticed CE shows an "on back order" for JJ ECC83/12AX7S. Now 6L6's too? Drat... And Magic Parts (Ruby Tubes) says no more tubes are scheduled to arrive from China for the rest of the year. I'm sure other shortages elsewhere. Can only imagine manufacturers sidelined production during covid period due to slack orders. And there's a delay in revving up production again. You know what happens next... co$t goes up, supply & demand. Phooey!

Restarting China production as in turned off by Corona you mean?
It’s worse then that as there was a fire in Aug 2019 in a factory next to Shugan that burned down and the town that they where in will not allow them to reopen.
They are opening a factory elsewhere and where expecting this to take 18 months before the pandemic hit!

If they do get things started up soon then that would be nice!

And somewhat closer to home, after something else entirely but by chance searched for 6L6 -- https://www.long-mcquade.com/13132/Guit ... p_Tube.htm. Albeit at a somewhat serious $$$ premium.
