Chassis Source and Size

Post by bryankloos »

Hey all,

I’m lookin for a good source of chassis for my project. It needs to be a blank chassis, preferably steel, and have an angled front.

I will have 7 knobs, 1 input and 2 switches on my front. I thinking a Princeton size chassis would work? Thoughts?

Also, what’s the best source for said enclosure?

Thanks

I like Mojotone's Princeton Reverb chassis, steel.

What are you doing for custom one-off face plates and back plates?

Indcom Graphics. They will do dye sublimation and laser engraving.

With Indcom and Precision Design, do they have faceplate material to build upon, or de we need to send them drilled blanks?

I'd like to be able to send measurements/locations of holes and have the company produce on adhesive backed material.

Is this an option? If not, what is the standard procedure?

Yes, they have lots of materials to choose from. Yes, that's exactly what you do: send them a PDF (to scale) showing your faceplate and drilling locations.

Thanks again.

Hi Bryan,

These can be any drawing program that can output a scale PDF (or other vector formats). A lot of the layouts you see on this site were done in Visio. I'm a Mac guy and use a program called EazyDraw. You can probably even make a faceplate drawing with PowerPoint.

I use Indcom as well. I use the free version of fusion 360 to design the panel and cutouts, save as a dxf file then import that dxf file into inkscape (free as well) and add my graphics and fonts. I then save/export as a PNG file to send to Steve at Indcom.
This video got me started https://youtu.be/UOQezMJ560o If using Indcom you dont need to do learn the Kicad section which is the 3rd major step in that vid
I started using PCB's like the video but the colors are limited and the plates were 1/8 thick leaving very little thread on potentiometers but it's the same steps though for fusion360 and inkscape and then you can choose where to have them made

There is no longer a free version of fusion 360, they give you a free trial for like 90 days and then it's over. :(

You are correct, It's actually a year and you just reminded me I got only a few months before I need to learn a new program or buy
I think "freecad" was an alternative. I'll be looking into this soon

I've been using inkscape. I'm not a graphics designer by any stretch but besides a little frustration was able to produce faceplates that line up with the graph paper i printed out and taped to my chassis. didn't drill any holes until i had the plates in hand so that i could be sure they matched up. i used a local trophy shop that does dye sublimation, cost me about 40 bucks for front and back along with two logo badges (would've been cheaper if i hadn't gone with white text on black background as there was an upcharge for the extra ink used, but in the grand scheme of things i wanted a particular look and got it). i was happy to support another local small business and already referred a friend's band mate

Hi, you might try Tube Town https://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/chassis-shop/. Disclaimer, I'm not their agent :D A good repository of all things amp though, especially if you are on this side of the pond.

I ended up ordering a custom unit from Seaside, out of Canada.
The price seemed fair for a custom sized chassis for my current build.
I'm hoping to have it in the next several days and can report back on quality and accuracy of dimensions.

Thanks for the guidance.
