Power Transformer on Blues Junior making ringing noise?

Post by Soma89 »

So i just bought a fender blues jr and am very happy with it so far.
I was in the process of putting in a C. Rex speaker, took the chassis off..and then plopped it back in. Now that I turn it on I am noticing a high pitched ringing when I turn the amp on. Its an acoustic sound that does not come through the speakers.
I took the chassis out of the cab again and fired it up to discover it is indeed the power transformer making this sound. Could I have damaged it when I took the chassis off the first time? What can I do to remedy it at this point?

A power transformer can only be vibrating at the wall voltage frequency of 50 or 60 Hz depending on where you live, which I would consider a ringing tone.
60 Hz sounds like one octave below a low B on the guitar, is this what you're calling a ringing tone?

No. This is an acoustic high pitched ringing. Not single coil hum at all. If I hold the transformer like a baseball the noise stops. I believe its microphonic. I actually fixed it by taping a piece of wood on top of the transformer and its 80% gone.
Anyone kniw if this could hurt the amp?

The ringing even if you where not able to reduce it by 80% will not harm the amp, but if it where me I would remove the end cap on it , pack it up with enough black automotive form-a- gasket to flow out some when you bolt the cover back on and then remove the issue from your cares!

Note that the amount of sealer you will use will take a full 2 days to set up, a hair dryer set to low blowing at it for a few hours will greatly speed up the settting of the sealer if you can't wait 2 days.

Try to tighten the bolts of the PT. Sometimes they loosen up when the chassis is handled like that.

So i fill it up like a cup, close it up, and let her dry for a couple days?

Have you removed all the tubes, and the spring/metallic retainer for the EL84s to see if the ringing stopped? The transformer vibrations might be causing one of the tubes or hardware to ring from acoustical coupling through the chassis, and the pressure of your hand may have been enough to damp the noise.
Just a thought, before you make any changes you might not need to.

Yes I have put my ear to the transformer when i removed rhe chassis and determined that its 100% coming from the transformer. Everything else around the amp is silent.

About the only thing you can do is attempt to shim up the core with hardwood slivers and tighten the laminations like instructed in the previous posts. The vibration can only be 60 hz if it’s the power transformer. It could emit a sound similar to a fluorescent lamp. If it’s only audible when you aren’t playing it really means nothing. I’ve had power transformers that hum.

Yes, just fill it up.
Excess that comes out can easily be trimmed off once it all drys.

To make clean faster you can masking tape around the perimeter of the PT on the chassis so you can just lift off the tape and then trim with a single edge blade.

Hi, I am experiencing something similar one of my amps. Could you listen to my short demo video and let me know if the noise is similar or different?

Your reverb tank is on the verge of feeding back. If you're unhappy with the sound, you can replace the tank, or experiment with damping the springs slightly.

I have a spare reverb tank of the same model which produces the same sound. Also when I disconnect the amp reverb RCAs and use a digital spring reverb the amp makes the same ringing noise. I am fairly confident the tank is not the issue.

We shouldn't assume things. Is your reverb tank in a bag? It should be.
