SSS/ODS Clean Tone Hybrid: Is this technically feasible?

Post by jfs322 »

Hello,

I have a SSS clone (6L6, 100-watt based on #002) and a Skyline HRM (EL-34), both of which I love. However, lately I am wondering if it’s possibly to create a new amp (or mod one of the existing amps) to create a clean tone that is a hybrid/combination of the elements of each that I love. Specifically, I love the base clean tone of the SSS, but at times feel it lacks that thick, fat lower midrange of the Skyline EL-34 ODS clean channel.

So is it possible to create a hybrid of sorts, the base tone of SSS but with that really thick, fat bottom end /midrange of a Skyline EL-34 clean channel? NOTE: I’ve tried clones of a Skyline voiced SSS (#005) and it didn’t have that thick Skyline ODS tone I’m looking to add into my SSS, so I’m not sure it’s as simple as modd-ing the front end voicing of the SSS to Skyliner. I imagine there are other circuit differences, besides the front end tonestack, that account for that fatness in the ODS clean channel (vis-a-vis the SSS).

So, thoughts? Is it technically possible to create a hybrid that has the base tone of the SSS but with the thickness of the Skyline EL-34 ODS? Note: I’m not an amp builder/tech, so I apologize for my lack of technical expertise.

Thanks!

That's easy!
Skyliner stack w/filters,SSS output section (w/driver) loaded with 4 EL-34's should be pretty Phat.
If you want bigger mids you can do a Music Man version and run the 34's at 700V.
After that if you want more mids seek medication

I do not think its possible. It is one or the other, unfortunately. The choices made in the preamp for the SSS do not work for OD.

I have this same concern when contemplating an ODRS/ODSR #60 build and trying to use the JM preamp into "ODRS/ODSR #60" OD section.
I feel that the choices made in the JM preamp will harm how the OD sounds.
