Bell Tone/Newcomb Maas Carillon Organ PA

Post by aumamps »

Just picked this up from a church.
It's a model 500.
Has a quad of RCA6L6s in it...can't wait to test them.

Anyways. Apparently it's a great amp on its own and the chimes input sounds great for guitar. I've seen a few of these online being sold as converted guitar amps. Has anyone had any experience with them? Can't find a schematic and was curious if anyone here is familiar with these.
I was able to get some specs on the trannies and how the tubes operate (it uses a 6v6 to power the screen grids on the 6l6s...weird)

Quite frankly I'm stoked just to have the magic eye tube indicator since I already have a box of magic eye tubes I've salvaged from elsewhere.

Putting the transformers aside, if those 4 black plate RCA outputs test good that's like 300 bucks worth of valve right there!

You'll have to pay for it , but I bet Sams photo facts has the schematic.

Yup, big bucks!
Those wax cased caps all need to go and a buddy of mine who has now passed had one of these he modded for high gain and if I recall right he had a oscillation issue and had to either rewire things to get less wire length feeding the PI tube, or the wires out of the PI to the outputs.
Either way I think he ended up making the gird wires short by extending the plateside of the wire run.

"Only used on Sundays." Right?

As Stevem says, plan on replacing all the wax film caps. Don't take a chance, many if not all have gone leaky with age. Same with the power supply electrolytics. Put on a grounded AC cable and deep-six the inevitable death cap between AC line and chassis. Nice catch on the rack of RCA black-plates! You could try them out in your other guitar amps, keep 'em in this one. Or flog them on ebay or reverb, that would fund your rebuild & leave change left over. Looks like your Bell is in excellent shape, no rust or mouse nests, excellent find. And a magic eye besides, wow what could be better? Here's lookin' at ya!

If SAMS has the schematic, you may be able to get it free from the public library. I've done that through the public library in Baltimore. They've been incredibly accommodating by emailing it to me. All I needed was a library card.

It's quite a find. I hope it is everything you expect and that the tubes are good!

Pull/test the RCA Blackplate 6L6GC's----- save them for your real BF Fender amps (or sell them).

Nothing inside that amp (caps, resistors, switches, wire, etc) is likely to be in good enough shape to re-use.

Think Safety/Reliability before Cool Old Mojo when rebuilding this unit.

Don't build a Safety/Fire hazard------ Use modern fusing, grounding, and reliable components. Someone (maybe you) has to plug a guitar into it, grasp the strings and play without risk of injury.

Maybe the orig transformers will support the guitar circuit you end up building into the amp, and maybe they won't.

Here's a Webster PA head I gutted and built a 6L6GC x 2 version of a Marshall 2204 circuit into (I was tired of building Tweed and BF Fender circuits into these old PA heads):
