70's Dumble Indicator Lamp Assembly Part #?

Post by rccolgan »

Hello all! My hunt today is figuring out what indicator light assembly part number (or lead to information) for my SSS #004 clone I built. Here is some pictures for reference:

So far I've stumbled upon Dialight 81 series neon lamp assemblies which looks pretty similar. Here is the data sheet http://www.dialightsignalsandcomponents ... at/53D.pdf

I'm looking to the forum to understand:
  • Did Dumble use these Dialight 81 series neon lamp holders? or is the indicator lamp for SSS #004 different?
  • What role does the internal resistor play with the Dialight Neon holder. Brightness?
  • What voltage tap did Dumble use for these type of indicators? 6.3v heaters, 120AC?

I believe Dumble amps eventually changed over to LED's but I'm going for the purist point of view for my 70's style.

Thanks in advance!

Neon indicators are typically powered from the line since a neon bulb needs around 70V to glow. The resistor is required for current limiting.

Thank you, Martin. That helps clear that up a lot. I'm continuing to dig. I thinkkkk I can get a T-3 1/4 bayonet socket with an incandescent bulb along with the blue lens cap from above. No messing with resistor values and might be just as bright as a Fender jewel. Will let everyone know what I find.

Alright.. I believe I'm 98.999% sure I tracked down (and confirmed via purchasing) what indicator lamp lens that Dumble used for SSS #004. I am still unsure what bulb socket was used based on the very blurry gut shot, but I have a pretty good idea how it is visually put together.

Blue Dialight/Dialamp 135 series lens caps. The data sheet says 9/16 27 threads for the cap BUT I found that standard Fender type T47 T3 1/4 bayonet style sockets are 9/16 24 and the Dialight 135 lens screws in securely without any indication that the threads are cross threading.

135 – 32xx – 003

I picked up a NOS Dialight T3 1/4 socket (95 series) https://www.mouser.com/ds/2/109/07D-55744.pdf but there is an extra flange on the outside that doesn't quite look right when I compared to pictures of #004. I found https://www.amplifiedparts.com/products ... relampable and will be using this one instead of a standard Fender bulb holder.

Some pictures of the combination of parts I picked up.

I’m happy to grow the knowledge base as much as I can. We all get better that way. Looking forward to whatever investigation I go on next in the land of amplifiers.
