My first Dumble - or another Tweedle Dee

Post by guitarmike2107 »

So Norybrook pushed me over the edge and I decided to build a Tweedle Dee at the same time, 4 evenings later and it is finished!

Quite enjoyed the build, the layout is very clean and easy to work with.

Anyway here are some photo's, the layout I used and a parts list that may be helpful for anyone else looking to build one,
It is a head build too and I will start the head cab and 1 x 12 speaker cab tomorrow.
The layout uses a DPDT on off switch to meet current EU safety standards and we added a HT fuse.

Playing it through my 2 x 12 closed back cab it has too much bass, well more than I would want, so I am going to trim that a bit, maybe put it on a switch,
but otherwise it sounds very very nice. I am running 6L6's in mine for extra kick.

There are more photo's on the modulus amplification facebook page too.

Thank you to the gents here who shared the information in the first place, this forum is a great resource that I really should contribute more to.

Great looking build! I am sure it sounds as sweet as it looks!

Regarding the EU safety standard you mentioned, so you cannot use 2 x SPST switches ( a standby and a power swicth) such as on the original Tweed amps but need to use only 1 DPDT switch?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure it's not about standby, but about SPST vs DPDT, in some older amps it used to just switch the hot lead, but for a lot of common standards, they prefer you switch both hot and neutral at the same time.

Safer because I'd wager if somehow one side fails to open, the other should still and keep it 'closed' or maybe for other reasons I'm not aware of.

Thanks Phil. Switching the hot and neutral at the same time , it does sound like a safer thing to do.

I guess it something that we do not need to follow on this side of the pond.

Mike,

I didn't realise the standby switch thing was a CE issue.

Regarding the bass. If you think about it, the tweed deluxe was designed as a small combo so the extra bass was a positive thing in a small box.

I'm going to make a small matching 1x12 cab and I think the extra bass won't be an issue on a small size open cabinet :D

are you going to tweak the 25uF cathode caps to 5uf ?

thanks for the help with my build. I really like your lead dress on your build. Mine looks like it has twice as many components as yours it's so tidy! just goes to show you don't need to twist wires to keep noise down.

Thanks Guys, I believe the standards have been changes that any hardwired amps should use a DPDT switch, I have not checked the latest standard myself yet, but I have been told. This amp is not hardwired, but a DPDT switch is safer and easy to wire in place.
No Standby on this amp anyway, but SPST is fine for that.
The EU standard treat the mains side of the power transformer more carefully, is is the reason the I have all the mains terminals heat shrinked like that too.

@Norybrook, I am going to build a tweed deluxe 1 x 12 sized cab too, but I might put a low bass switch on the amp to switch a cathode cap in and out. On my deluxe head build I have the first shared cathode bypassed with 1.68uf (2 caps) that plays really well with the closed back cabs but then gets a bit too boxy with a 1x12 Open back cab.

Looks great! The mains power switch may be a DPDT, but it’s being used as a DPST ;^) That arrangement has been common on UK amps for some time. It shows up on Marshall schematics in the early 1980’s.

PS What’s a “Twiddle Dee?”

Yes, correct Martin, that one is actually a DP/ST... slip of the tongue 8)

Here is the head cabinet I built for this, stuck with the tweed heritage on this one, think I might try and get a darker brown panel for it if I can find the right material

Thanks guys, was really pleased with how this turned out. I still need to work on getting the shellac finish really even in tone, but it is a work in progress.

@Norybrook it is a lovely covering job, I made the cab and came up with the design but I will be honest to say I got Steve to cover it for me, he works for me and does a great job on all the cabs we make. I don't have time to cover cabs myself unless it is a rush job or Steve gets stuck, then I get involved.

Going to start making a TV front cabinet this week for it.
