Wire a pot like a variable resistor?

On some schematics the input is on the center lug, and the output on one side. the other side is not connected at all.

On other schematics the input is on one side, and the output is on the other side, AND the input lug is connected to the center lug.

Do these two wirings work exactely the same way?

I'm attaching a schem and a layout. The schematic show one way of wiring it, and the layout show a different way... and I suspect that they work exactely the same way...but it would be nice to be sure...

They'll work the same way. The style where all three lugs are used is considered superior in the event of a pot failure. Mostly the concern is about if the wiper goes open, however, I've only had one pot fail on me and it was an outer lug that went.
