I own a Dr Z Stangray anniversay tag head in red of course with open back 212 1 blue/ 1 gold celestion alnico.
The Stangray is loud and clean, nothing but good to say about this amp. I have helped a few people build one but honestly you can get one cheap.
The Songwriter comes in at least two versions and rjguitars.net has a good octal tubed version kit.

Re: Wondering what my next project should be...
Thanks for the input. I've done a low power Songwriter that I like, but I'm dealing with a lot of real
estate so I wanted to up the power. Octals would be cool, but I have iron that's waiting for 40watts.
I also was thinking of something more dumblesque, but I really don't want to go down that road at
the moment.

I really like octal preamp tubes 6SL7 NOS or new production are good.
A pair of KT88 power section 100w PT and 100w OT 2k primary would make a fantastic pedal pusher amp.

Re: Wondering what my next project should be...
Although I like the idea of octals in the preamp, I'm leaning towards either an EF-86 or 5879.
I've got preamp boards made up for both a GA-40 and a Stangray type of circuit, but I want
to stick with EL-84s and I have a speaker ready to go with more of a British sound in mind.
