Speaker ID

Post by Colossal »

Hey guys,

Have a look at this photo. This was of Allan Holdsworth's home studio and was taken in the mid to late 90s. Any guesses on what the speakers might be in the 1x12s and 2x12s? Wondering if the 2x12s were loaded with EVs (based on that big dust cap). Thoughts? Thanks.

It's a shame the picture is so grainy. I'd like to get a closer look..... at EVERYTHING. If those are EV's they are OEM's since their logo is not on the dust caps (I know, I'm stating the obvious) :-)

No way of telling , there are a few Eminence speakers that look just the same from the front.
I can tell you one thing for sure and that's this.
He played twice at my friends music school, both times with different rented gear, and each time he pretty much sounded just like his recordings.

His sound was basically all in his much loved , but not made in a long time Yamaha magic stomp pedals from what garthered.

That's what I think.

I was guessing that about the speakers in the 2x12s. I thought EVs had the logo on them back then; the reissue Classics EVM12Ls do not. My other thought is G12K100s. But who knows what they could be. AH did use Vintage 30s, so maybe the 1x12s had V30s in them.

Here are the full photos from that article

Sure, impossible to tell. And you're right; he always sounded like himself. His backline was almost always rental gear. He was often seen with a pair of Twins for his clean and a Marshall 4x12 for his lead tone. My guess is the Marshall cabs would have been loaded with G12T75s or G12-somethings. In the 90s he toured with his rack gear (Boogie amps and Rocktron delays, etc) but that changed to the Yamaha UD Stomp, Yamaha DG60 combos (G12K100 speakers), and then ultimately to the six Magicstomps. He was endorsed by Hughes & Kettner in the 2000s. He would use a pair of H&K Switchblade 1x12 combos for clean and a pair of H&K 2x12s or 4x12s for lead (paired with a trio of Magicstomps into a SS power amp). The 2 and 4x12s were loaded with Vintage 30s.

I took this photo at a show in California in 2009

I see four large dust cap speakers, and 1 small dust cap speaker. Those pics won't help much, I'm sorry to say. There are at least a good 1/2 dozen popular Emi and Celestion speakers they could be, but that doesn't rule out other brands.
