I am working on a Friends 1421, his is actually a Sears 10XL.
It is, kind of, a cheap point to point mess. I am trying to clean it up, do a cap job, improve the heater wiring, etc etc.
I have Never Heard one of these amps. Have no idea how Quiet/Noisy it was. The OT is the size of a quarter...seems pretty small, especially for a single ended amp. Cannot imagine this thing has much headroom.
Anyway.....they had the Heater CT and High Voltage Winding CT grounded to the same place. Would it be "better" if i tried to separate those as far as i can...even a few inches.?
Thank You

Re: CT Grounds
No, I've had great luck grounding those together. Just make sure the input jack and preamp grounds far from those.
Tube junkie that aspires to become a tri-state bidirectional buss driver.
Re: CT Grounds
Wow...OK.
That will make my life easier. Not a whole lot of room in this chassis.
Thanks Again

Re: CT Grounds
First and foremost the HV CT needs to go direct to the negative of the first HV filter cap. If the heater CT then goes to that point then no issue really.
That cap negative junction should also be the star point for the output stage cathode, and the screen supply capacitor negative.
If you are making an effort, then adding some protection is well worth it - including series ss diodes in series with each anode of the 6X4, and a fuse in that HV CT lead going to the cap negative.
Ciao, Tim

Re: CT Grounds
Yes...i hear what you are saying.
This amp lay-out is not set up well.
Tube sockets in middle of chassis.
Power tube socket is V2.
Was made with a Can-Cap
etc etc
So it is not the easiest amp to wire per standard intelligence.

Re: CT Grounds
Got pictures? I'm sure we'd all like to see!
Re: CT Grounds
It's one of these.
The shot from the back.....makes the OT look 3x bigger than it really is.
I took out the can cap...probably going to use 3 Radials and Term Strips, just because i have them laying around.
Not going to do anything (permanent) that that would "Devalue" this piece of junk.
Do not understand why people get so hung up on these things.
Yeah, i can shoot some gut shots if you guys are really interested.

If you look at their pics.....there are no "speaker wires".
They ran the OT magnet wire about one foot out, and you solder That to the speaker terms.
