I've got an Umble pedal, a Howie and a Zen. The Howie looks to have a similar design approach as the Umble (i.e. tube simulation with FETs) although it's more complicated. I could see how it might have been used as a starting point. The Zen on the other hand, is nothing like the Umble and uses a different approach for it's distortion.tele_player wrote:I think I read somewhere that Umble circuit was used as the jumping-off point for one of the currently popular long-waiting-list overdrive boxes. I don't recall which... maybe the Zen?

This new approach is a lot more promising than the old one. To really mimic the sound of a particular tube amp, you need to adjust the gain of each stage in relation to the amount of headroom available.LeftyStrat wrote:Apparently, even the runffgroove guys revisited this approach:

The Runoffgroove guys used this new approach for the new version of their Marshall "simulator" called Thor which seems to have turned out rather well.
Another issue that bugs me with these FET tube emulators is that they don't take advantage of the low impedance of solid state circuitry. It should be possible to scale tonestack, interstage attenuators and tone shaping caps to much lower impedances and to get a better signal-to-noise ratio.

On the subject of simulations, have you seen this site:

I've been wanting to build these two just to see how they sound, but every time I look at the component count for the speaker sim I change my mind.

It's not the Zen, although numerous comparisons have been made. Alfonso came up with it separately, but sometimes form follows function and they meettele_player wrote: I think I read somewhere that Umble circuit was used as the jumping-off point for one of the currently popular long-waiting-list overdrive boxes. WRT Doug Hammonds Meteor circuit, I posted a link to it here before (to the ultimate archiving site; the wayback machine). Search function is only going back the last 3 months or so?? Did we loose some backups? Luckily I have them on my harddrive. The pedal was express-ish for sure. From what I head, didn't quite have the depth of an amp, and not quite as out of control, but quite interersting.
