I can't believe how much a volume pot affects the tone and overall feel of an amp. I'm not very technical but know what my ears like and the difference between the AB pot and Clarostat is night and day. The AB pot has a mid warmth and elastic like feeling when playing. The Clarostat pot had great crunch but was thin in comparison and lost a fair amount of harmonics and mid warmth.

Nice one David.
Getting an Express right can be a humbling experience, even for the adept.
Well done!

Thanx Bob, I liked it so much I'm going to build another with 7591s instead of EL34s and VVR power scaling, as the 7591's characteristics just beg for power scaling, which should be a boon on the Express.

Have a pair of '61 Westinghouse large base 7591s on the way right now.
