20-Ga Topcoat Pre-Tinned Green PVC Coated Wire 600v

Post by xtian »

My favorite hookup wire. Last time, I bought from mojotone:

Any alternative places to buy?

I use the same stuff for general hookup, but 22ga, and get it from valvestorm. http://www.valvestorm.com/Products/Wire

18ga teflon big bottle heaters from Watts or Apex jr , 20ga preamp heaters from the same.

edit : just saw your purdy pics from your latest build, and fwiw the insulation on the VS stuff is not as vibrant

We use that in our panel shops sometimes in lieu of ferrules to reduce manufacturing time - nice stuff. I've never tried to solder it though, is the PVC high temp?

For chassis wiring, the max ampacity for copper is:
18g - 16 amps
20g - 11 amps
22g - 7 amps

I've been using 22g tefzel for most everything. I usually run a separate feed for the power tube and preamp tube heaters.

Only in green? everything looks like a ground wire... fwiw I like some color coding according to function otoh lots of good amps built with single-color insulation so no big deal really.
down technical blind alleys . . .

No, Leo, I do red, green, blue for DC, signal, cathodes. You can do your M&Ms the way you want.

Topcoat wire solders very well. I think it is pre-tinned. The big advantage is that it stays where you put it. The disadvantage is the thickness of the insulation, which really isn't a big deal. Remember, no matter what, it's PVC and it will melt and burn. It isn't PFTE.
