Grid Resistors for ODS V2

Post by ValvElectric »

Hey guys,
I can't for the life of me find a reasonable source for the 68k & 180k 2W carbon film resistors found on the V2 grids of most Overdrive Specials. I know HAD used NOS Iskras and Pihers but the few sources I've found with these values are asking a small fortune, and it seems these values are only available by special order on Mouser.
So what are you guys using?

Dumble seldom used 2w resistors on the grids.

He used Piher 1/2w or 1w NTE Flameproof 1/2w HW, Dale wirewound on V1a input grid on some later amps, Sprague Q line relabeled iskras, piher, beyschlag

You're right.
My memory was momentarily clouded by a #102 layout that insisted the grids be 2w CF's.
I too am a fan of NOS but I find myself usually having to order internationally to get them for less than $5 a piece. :?

Try to find NOS Draloric or Resista from the same period as the earlier Pihers ie late '60s into the '70s. I got some a while ago and they were much cheaper than the Pihers, and they are quality Made in Germany product.

I don't believe HAD used either but they were in their day competitive with Piher and highly regarded by audio manufacturers at the time. I've used them myself although not yet 100% in a build. Waiting until Pihers become unobtainium, which won't be long I think.

Now even the '90s Pihers are getting pricey (they are slightly smaller than the earlier ones). The old Dralorics are slightly bigger than the old Pihers, the Resistas shorter but noticeably fatter. The Dralorics are beige and the Resistas are dark brownish purple.

All comments are relative to 1/2W resistors.

I have never seen a Dumble with Iskras. The tan carbon films you see in later amps were .7W Draloric ( Sprague rebranded as Q lines) used in the signal path or ocassionally a 1W, normally 1W used in the PS rail and on the pre-amp plates, 2W used on the cap balancing resistors and the bleeder resistor in the MusicMan plate voltage scheme.

I don't ever recall seeing an inductive wirewound at V1a in later amps. What folks think is wirewound, is actually a CGW glass passivated thick film resistor.

I have a pretty decent supply of vintage CF resistors, but if I had to choose an easily obtainable 1/2W CF across all values from Mouser, it would be the KOA Speer CF1/2 series.

However, if you are hung up on "the look", one might not like the smaller size as the body is only around 7mm in length.

Can you point me towards these I can't find the CF type only MF?

My mistake, after quick observation, you're most certainly correct.
